China ordered an "all-out" rescue effort in a remote area of Tibet on Friday after an earthquake killed at least 16 people and injured dozens more, state media reported.

Footage showed rescue workers clambering in the dark through some of the 339 houses that Xinhua said collapsed or were damaged in Thursday evening's 7.0-magnitude quake.

Diners ran out of restaurants and items fell off wobbling supermarket shelves as the tremor struck, footage on state broadcaster CCTV showed.

Xinhua said that 76 people were injured, 11 of them seriously, and that over 12,000 residents were evacuated following the tremor at 10:33 pm (1433 GMT).

Hundreds of rescue workers and police were deployed, as well as sniffer dogs and equipment, to locate people under the rubble, CCTV said. More than 300 soldiers were also mobilized.

The epicenter was in Baqing county, an thinly populated area over 4,500 meters (14,800 feet) above sea level and at least a 10-hour drive from regional capital Lhasa, state media said.

One resident told local media that her family had just gone to bed when her home shook, knocking over objects, and that they "rushed outside without even taking the time to get dressed".

"My legs were shaking the entire time I was heading downstairs, and by the time I reached the bottom, I was so terrified that I burst into tears," the woman said.

Local residents "are afraid to return to their homes", she said. "They set up tents along the roadside or spent the night in their cars."

A man told the Beijing News that the "very strong" quake left his home "creaking and rattling".

"I was asleep when it hit. Everyone has run outside now and is too afraid to go back in. I'm currently driving to an open area to sleep in my car," he said.

Broadcaster CCTV also showed emergency personnel with helmets carrying a person and shining flashlights on damaged buildings, some with collapsed roofs.

Tibet is largely inaccessible to foreign journalists and Chinese authorities are the only source of official information.

- 'Significant casualties' -

President Xi Jinping said the tremor caused "significant casualties" and took place at a "high-altitude location" in cold weather.

"(We) must go all-out to carry out search and rescue operations and do our utmost to treat the injured, so as to minimize casualties," Xinhua quoted Xi as saying.

Earthquakes in China are relatively common.

In January 2025, a quake in Tibet's rural Tingri county killed at least 126 people.

The disaster came little over a year after at least 148 people died in a quake in remote Gansu province in northwest China in December 2023, according to state media.

That quake was China's deadliest since 2014, when more than 600 people perished in the southwestern province of Yunnan.

A massive tremor in 2008 in Sichuan province left about 90,000 people dead or missing, including thousands of schoolchildren.

On August 26, Tibet was struck by an avalanche of ice and rock and a massive flood, which officially left 43 people dead on the Chinese side and at least 1,400 dead in Nepal.

An explosion at a coal mine in northwestern Türkiye killed two people, injuring five others and leaving one miner trapped, local media reported Friday, citing the provincial governor.

The explosion was caused by "firedamp", or flammable gas, said Zonguldak governor Osman Hacibektasoglu.

"Eight people were in the tunnel, seven were rescued. Unfortunately, two of our miners died after being taken to hospital," said Zonguldak governor Osman Hacibektasoglu.

Five others were injured, he added.

"One of the miners is still inside the mine. We have made contact with him and are trying to get him out," the governor said.

Two of the injured suffered burns and were in serious condition, according to the official.

Earlier this month, five people were killed in a coal mine collapse in western Türkiye.

The deadliest mining disaster in Türkiye's history occurred in the western town of Soma in 2014, when 301 miners died from carbon monoxide poisoning following an underground fire triggered by an explosion.

Testimonies from miners and technical reports later pointed to a series of basic safety violations, including the absence of adequate carbon monoxide detection systems.

In the aftermath of the disaster, the government pushed through reforms aimed at improving safety and working conditions in the sector.

Romanian authorities said Friday that a search and rescue mission is underway in the Black Sea after a cargo ship caught fire, leaving one dead and three missing.

The incident occurred about 13 nautical miles (15 miles) east of the port city of Constanta, according to the Romanian Naval Authority, and was reported around 10 a.m. local time. The ship’s crew consisted of 10 Ukrainian citizens and 3 Azerbaijanis, The Associated Press said.

The Ministry of Interior said border police were informed by the Maritime Coordination Center about a fire on board a commercial vessel, which “suffered major damage and capsized, with an imminent risk of sinking.”

“Of the 13 people on board, ten were recovered by another commercial vessel in the area, nine alive and one deceased,” the ministry said. “Three others are still missing.”

Beijing accused Washington on Friday of "undermining" scientific cooperation after the US Defense Department said dozens of American universities had cut ties with certain foreign institutions, including some in China, citing security risks.

The two governments are jostling for influence in science and technology and have often accused each other of security threats and interference.

The United States Defense Department announced on Monday that 30 US universities had "fully mitigated" their ties with a list of institutions that pose a "concern to national security".

The docket, most recently published in July, lists dozens of Chinese military, scientific and technological institutions, as well as ones in Russia and Iran.

"China is always opposed to the US practice of overstretching the concept of national security," a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce said in response to a question about the US Defense Department's announcement.

"The relevant actions taken by the US side essentially coerce American institutions into 'picking sides'," the unnamed spokesperson said in a statement.

"Deliberately undermining normal scientific cooperation between China and the United States will only weaken the US' own scientific progress and innovation."

China would take "necessary measures" to protect its institutions, the spokesperson said, warning the US to stop imposing "discriminatory and restrictive measures" against them.
