A collision between two high-speed trains south of Madrid killed 30 people on Wednesday and the toll could rise, regional authorities said in Spain's second such disaster this year.

Images shared by local media showed the wreckage of two trains strewn on the tracks and an embankment as emergency services rushed to the scene, while shocked travelers dragged away their suitcases as they escaped.

The accident in the central region of Castilla-La Mancha comes one month before Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who faced heavy criticism for the first disaster, seeks to overturn unfavorable polls in an early general election.

Sources from authorities in Castilla-La Mancha told AFP "at least 30" people had died, raising a previous toll of 10. Authorities have not yet given a toll for any wounded.

Esther Padilla, spokeswoman for the government of Castilla-La Mancha, had told local media CMM that "it is possible that the number will increase".

State railway operator Renfe confirmed in a statement that the main high-speed line from Madrid to southern Spain had been suspended after one of its services suffered an accident with a train from private Spanish company Iryo.

A spokesperson for the Spanish emergency services told AFP the trains collided just before 9:00 am (0800 GMT) in the municipality of Urda, around 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Madrid.

"All resources are currently being deployed," the emergency services spokesperson said, including "several fire crews, three helicopters, and two mobile intensive care units".

- 'Shocked' -

Sanchez, who is seeking to extend his eight-year premiership in the November 29 vote, said on X that he was "shocked" by the accident and sent "my love, solidarity and support to all the victims and their families".

He cancelled his participation in a summit on obesity in Madrid after the news broke, while his Socialist party suspended all its campaign activities.

Condolences flooded in from across Spain and Europe. The Spanish royal household said on X it was "shocked and concerned" by the accident, conveying its support to the victims, their loved ones and the emergency services.

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said "Europe mourns" with the victims after the "devastating news", while French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his country's "solidarity".

Spain's high-speed rail network has received huge investment in recent years, growing to become the world's second-largest after China and a source of national pride.

But Wednesday's accident comes after another collision between two high-speed trains outside the southern village of Adamuz in January left 46 dead, which raised major questions about safety on the country's railways.

That crash was Spain's deadliest train accident since 2013, when 80 people died after a train veered off a curved section of track outside the northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela.

Both of this year's accidents happened on the line linking Madrid to the southern city of Seville.

One of the country's busiest routes, it was Spain's first high-speed line when it opened in 1992 to coincide with the Seville universal exposition.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on Wednesday that any Israel-instigated attack would have a "devastating impact" on global markets.

"Devastating impact on int'l markets of any Israel-instigated military misadventure” in the Arabian Gulf region “remains major concern for both gas suppliers and consumers," Araghchi said in a post on X.

His post came as Qatari mediators presented Iran with a new draft deal on Sunday to end the war with the US and Israel, and Tehran is expected to send a response to the draft by the end of the week, an official briefed on the negotiations said on Wednesday.

The new draft being considered by Iran sets a seven-day timeline addressing both Tehran's and Washington's concerns, laying out daily confidence-building steps that each side must take, the official said.

The timeline could begin early next week and several countries would act as guarantors of the deal, the official added.

Qatar, along with Pakistan, has led mediation to end the war that the US and Israel launched in February. The conflict has disrupted global shipping and oil supplies and spilled over across other parts of the Middle East.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in comments published Wednesday that an expected meeting between Russian, US and Chinese leaders could offer a platform to redistribute influence, similar to what happened after World War II.

"We really don't want this to turn into 'Yalta 2, 3, 4', with a redistribution of influence," he said, referring to the 1945 summit of Soviet, US and British leaders on dividing up the post-World War II map.

The Kremlin has indicated that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US and Chinese counterparts, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific summit next month is under preparation.

"What China, Russia, and the United States might discuss has not yet been clearly defined today," Zelensky said in comments to journalists.

Russia has for years been seeking a comprehensive agreement with Washington on Europe's security architecture, and in particular an end to NATO's expansion near Russia's borders.

It casts its full-scale invasion of Ukraine as countering a threat posed by NATO -- a position widely rejected in Kyiv and the West, which says the invasion is an imperialistic land-grab by Putin.

"Russia wants this meeting more than anyone," Zelensky said, warning against handing Moscow "another major diplomatic advantage".

His comments came as Russia and Ukraine are due to meet next month with US envoys in the United Arab Emirates in a bid to revive talks towards ending Europe's worst conflict since World War II.

No date has yet been set for the meeting, but Zelensky said Ukraine wanted it to take place before the potential three-way talks between the Russian, US and Chinese leaders.

Zelensky also urged the United States to increase its supplies of Patriot air defense missiles, crucial to intercepting Russian attacks.

Ukraine had been receiving 12 a month from the United States this year, but has "to shoot down 150 ballistic missiles a month," Zelensky said.

Kyiv is also seeking a joint agreement to halt attacks on energy infrastructure ahead of winter and a maritime ceasefire to help safeguard its grain exports.

But Russia has rejected the idea of partial pauses in fighting before a final peace agreement has been reached.
