United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan held talks on regional developments on Sunday with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukri.

Meeting in Cairo, he accused Qatar of providing a platform for extremism and hatred.

“We must confront extremism and hate,” he added during a press conference with Shoukri.

“We are working on protecting our people from the rhetoric of hatred, violence and incitement,” he stressed.

Furthermore, he underlined the “very important” ties that bind Abu Dhabi and Cairo, saying they are vital in confronting joint challenges.

“We see in Egypt an honest country that supports stability in its Arab surroundings,” stressed the Gulf official.

Addressing regional developments, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed said: “We are working on uniting the Libyan army for the sake of Libya’s security.”

“We are interested in restoring as much Arab clout as possible to avoid vacuum in Libya, Syria and Yemen,” he stressed.

On Syria, he remarked: “The Iranian and Turkish meddling there have further complicated matters.”

He deemed the situation in Syria as “very dangerous”, while Shoukri highlighted the importance of supporting a political solution in the war-torn country.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed said that he was “more optimistic” about the situation in Iraq.

On Palestinian developments, he stated: “The UAE is employing all of its capabilities to ensure the success of the Egyptian efforts in the Palestinian reconciliation.”
