Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chairman and Army Chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met on Monday with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who was accompanied by a senior delegation.
Also present were Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ali Youssef and Ambassador to Egypt Imad al-Din Adawi.
Aboul Gheit told reporters the meeting was “very positive” and reaffirmed the Arab League's support for Sudan and its people.
He expressed hope for an immediate end to the fighting, the country’s rebuilding, and the return of displaced people. He also highlighted the serious humanitarian challenges Sudan is facing.
Aboul Gheit said the efforts of the Arab League, the United Nations, the African Union, and other key players aim to control the situation and help Sudan overcome the crisis.
He also mentioned that his upcoming visit to Sudan will shed light on the scale of the problem and the need for more action to stop the fighting, restore peace, and allow Sudanese people to secure their lives and bring stability back to the country.
On his part, Adawi praised the Arab League for always supporting Sudan, its just causes, and its national institutions.
He also emphasized that the League’s position acts as a “security shield” against foreign interference in Sudan’s internal matters.
The Sudanese Foreign Minister called the Arab League Secretary-General’s visit to Port Sudan “very important,” highlighting that it shows the League’s support for Sudan against efforts to destabilize the country.
Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, Youssef said the visit aims to discuss how the Arab League can assist Sudan, especially in areas like food security and other key issues affecting the Sudanese people.
Youssef also confirmed that the Arab League, under Aboul Gheit, has shown support for Sudan’s institutions.
Upon arrival, Aboul Gheit and his delegation met with Sudan’s Minister of Culture and Information, Khalid Ali Al-Ayser.
Al-Ayser told the Sudan News Agency he had urged the Arab League to hold an urgent meeting to prevent international interference in Sudan’s internal affairs.
