The combined profits of banks operating in Saudi Arabia, before zakat and taxes, increased during the month of May 2023, to about 6.33 billion riyals ($1.68 billion), by 14.3 percent, compared to profits of 5.54 billion riyals during the same month of 2022.
The monthly bulletin issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) for May 2023 showed the continued positive performance of Saudi banks despite global headwinds.
On June 12, Moody’s modified its view of the banking system in Saudi Arabia to “positive” from “stable,” noting that the demand for credit was high, and loan performance was improving, and likely to lead to strong profits for banks.
With regard to the combined balance sheet of banks in the Kingdom, the assets of banks operating in Saudi Arabia increased by 10 percent during the month of May 2023, compared to the same month of 2022, to reach about SAR 3.7 billion from SAR 3.4 billion.
As for total deposits, they amounted to SAR 2.39 billion, an increase of 9.7 percent compared to May 2022.
On the other hand, credit growth continued, supported by strong economic impetus. Loans provided by banks to the private sector increased by 10.7 percent, to reach more than SAR 2.3 billion by the end of May 2023.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) had said in its Article IV report on Saudi Arabia that the Saudi banking system was still following a strong path.
The IMF considered that the strong performance of banks was based on the ongoing efforts to modernize the regulatory and supervisory frameworks.
