The Sundance Film Festival Unveils Its Lineup Including Jennifer Lopez, Questlove and More

Next year's Sundance Film Festival will feature Jennifer Lopez singing and dancing in Bill Condon’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” Questlove exploring the legacy of Sly & The Family Stone and Associated Press journalist Mstyslav Chernov's latest documentary about the war in Ukraine.

The Sundance Institute on Wednesday unveiled 87 feature films set to premiere at the 2025 festival, kicking off on Jan. 23 in Park City, Utah.

Now in its 41st year, the festival remains a place of discovery for independent cinema and emerging voices. Because of its January timing, it’s also a gathering that arrives alongside the presidential inauguration. At the 2017 festival following Donald Trump’s first inauguration, Main Street was taken over by a lively women’s march full of celebrities. This year, no such plans have been announced.

“Sundance as a festival has endured as a place to gather through inaugurations every four years, through different cultural moments and political moments,” said festival director Eugene Hernandez. “We have a program that both engages with the world and also offers at the very same time an escape.”

Narrative films and documentaries premiering this year will touch on politicized topics, “stand your ground” laws, incarceration, the right to die and book banning. But Sundance doesn’t program by theme or have mandates about topics, said Kim Yutani, the festival’s director of programming.

“I think what you see across the program are stories that are told with real authenticity. There’s an innovative quality to many of these films,” Yutani said. “And the idea of free expression is something that is just as important to us.”

Documentaries are always a highlight at Sundance, where the conversation starts and often continues through the year into the Oscar race. Chernov follows his Oscar winning “20 Days in Mariupol” with “2,000 Meters to Andriivka,” which looks at a Ukrainian platoon on a mission to liberate a village from Russian occupation. It's a joint project between AP and PBS “Frontline."

“Free Leonard Peltier” looks at the Indigenous activist who has spent most of his life in prison since his conviction in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents in South Dakota. In July he was denied parole.

Hernandez further spotlighted Barry Levinson and Robert May’s episodic series “Bucks County, USA” about political divides in small town America and the friendship of two teenage girls despite their opposing views.

There are also several docs about famous musicians and actors including Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s “SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius),” Shoshannah Stern’s “Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore,” Amy Berg’s “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley” and Matt Wolf’s “Pee-wee as Himself.” Elegance Bratton also looks at the roots of house music in “Move Ya Body: The Birth of House.”

Some performances that may have people talking into the year include: Benedict Cumberbatch in “The Thing with Feathers,” about a father processing the loss of his wife; Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones in “Train Dreams” about a railroad day laborer from the “Sing Sing” writer and director; John Lithgow and Olivia Colman as father and daughter in “Jimpa”; Lopez in Condon’s lush and vibrant musical adaptation; Lily Gladstone and Youn Yuh-jung in Andrew Ahn’s “The Wedding Banquet”; Josh O’Connor in “Rebuilding”; and Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall in “Peter Hujar’s Day,” about New York’s downtown art scene in the 1970s, from Ira Sachs.

Film enthusiasts don’t need to make the trek through the snow to pricey Park City to engage with the festival’s offerings anymore. As with the past few years, about 60% of the program will be available online starting on Jan. 30. Tickets go on sale for individual films on Jan. 16 for the general public and even earlier for members.

“It's a really a great opportunity to just get a sampling of what’s to come in the new year for films that will travel far and wide to other festivals or make it into theaters down the line,” Hernandez said.

This will be one of the last years that the festival is primarily based out of Park City. Over the past year, the Sundance Institute has been exploring options for host cities starting in 2027. Finalists include Salt Lake City, Utah (with some events still in Park City), Boulder, Colorado, and Cincinnati, Ohio. An announcement is expected in the first quarter of 2025.

Netflix is in exclusive talks to buy Warner Bros Discovery's film and television studios along with its streaming assets after offering $28 per share, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said.

The parent of HBO, which has been exploring strategic options, received a second round of bids this week after Netflix, Paramount Skydance and Comcast made preliminary buyout proposals.

Netflix, which emerged as the top bidder, made a mostly cash offer, Reuters has previously reported.

The $28 per share offer compares with Warner Bros' closing price of $24.54 on Thursday and a previous offer from Paramount of nearly $24 for all of the company's assets that also include cable networks such as CNN, TNT and TBS.

Netflix and Warner Bros Discovery did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Netflix is aggressively diversifying beyond its core subscription model to drive new revenue streams.

A deal with Warner Bros, whose franchises include "Harry Potter", "Game of Thrones" and DC Comics, would transform Netflix into a vertically integrated media powerhouse, giving it one of Hollywood's most valuable libraries.

Netflix would gain exclusive long-term control over premium intellectual property while reducing its reliance on external studios as it expands into gaming, live entertainment and broader consumer ecosystems.

Bloomberg News reported Netflix has offered a $5 billion breakup fee if regulators block the deal and that the companies could announce the agreement within days.

The news of a potential deal has prompted a consortium of leading film industry figures to urge the US Congress to intervene if Netflix's bid succeeds, warning of a looming economic and institutional crisis in Hollywood, Variety reported.

Paramount has accused Warner Bros of running an unfair sale process that favors Netflix over other bidders, CNBC reported on Thursday, citing a letter sent by its newly merged media company.

"We strongly urge you to empower such a special committee comprised of directors with no potential appearance of bias or beholdenness to others whose interests may differ from those of the stockholders," Paramount's legal team was quoted as saying in the letter.

Paramount did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

In October, the Warner Bros board turned down a roughly $60 billion bid from Paramount for the entire company and subsequently launched a formal sales process for its assets.

Hit television series "Fallout" ups the stakes as it returns to screens for a sophomore season, its stars and makers say.

"You can play it two ways," actor Walton Goggins said as he premiered the new season in London on Tuesday. "You can play it safe, rely on what happened in season one, or you can go for broke. And we went for broke."

Based on the popular video game franchise of the same name, the live-action series centers on three main characters; former vault dweller Lucy (Ella Purnell), Maximus, a member of the Brotherhood of Steel (Aaron Moten) and Cooper Howard/The Ghoul (Goggins), a former movie star and mutated bounty hunter.

The new season picks up where the season one left off, with Lucy looking for her father Hank (Kyle MacLachlan), and pairing up with The Ghoul on a post-apocalyptic adventure through the Mojave Desert to New Vegas.

The show's executive producer, Jonathan Nolan, said audiences could expect "more of everything." "More madness, more humor, more violence. We just try to outdo ourselves," he said.

The second season also shows a new side to Lucy as her optimistic attitude clashes with The Ghoul's nihilistic worldview on their way to Sin City, said Purnell.

"She's in the wasteland now and she has to survive. You can't always do that by being nice," Purnell said. "I don't want to spoil it, but we'll see what happens to that moral compass."

The new season introduces Justin Theroux in the role of Robert House, the ruler of the New Vegas strip, and a major character in the franchise.

"It's a bit intimidating," said Theroux. "The players of this game and the fans of the show are really sort of the shareholders, so you don't want to disappoint them. But I worked very hard to hopefully not do that."

Also joining the cast are actors Macaulay Culkin and Kumail Nanjiani, as well as a host of new creatures, brought to life by puppeteers.

The eight-episode second season of "Fallout" starts streaming on Prime Video on December 17, with a new episode released weekly.

A theme park based on the beloved French comic strip series Asterix is to open in Germany, the first time the adventures of the pugnacious Gaul are to be the focus of an attraction outside France, its operator said on Tuesday.

An existing theme park called Belantis outside the east German city of Leipzig is to morph into an Asterix theme park by 2030-2031, operator Compagnie des Alpes said.

The new attraction will be a twin of the vast Parc Asterix outside Paris, one of France's premier tourist attractions which opened in 1989.

The change at the park in Germany will take place gradually, with the first area dedicated to Idefix -- the dog of Asterix's burly sidekick Obelix -- opening as early as March 2026, the French group said.

In terms of the numbers sold of Asterix comic books -- originally written and illustrated by the duo of Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo -- Germany is the second largest market, just behind France.

Compagnie des Alpes said that "this park has the potential to eventually welcome nearly 900,000 visitors per year".

The second most visited amusement park in France after Disneyland Paris, Parc Asterix welcomed 2.9 million visitors during the 2024-2025 season. It is currently ranked 8th most visited in Europe.

With the book franchise showing no sign of slowing after the deaths of Goscinny in 1977 and Uderzo in 2020, the latest Asterix cartoon adventure released in October was published in 19 languages and across 25 countries set in ancient Portugal.

"Asterix in Lusitania" was the 41st instalment in the legendary series, taking him to the far reaches of the Roman Empire, in an adventure now created by author Fabcaro and illustrator Didier Conrad.
