Iranian envoy to Saudi Arabia, Alireza Enayati, on Monday said that the development of Saudi-Iranian bilateral ties would introduce a new system of multilateral cooperation among countries.

Since April, Enayati has been linked to reports related to the post of the Iranian ambassador to Saudi Arabia before his name became seriously addressed in the Iranian state media.

The Iranian diplomat, who supervised Iran’s affairs with the GCC countries, narrated in an interview with Iran’s Tasnim news agency, the diplomatic path that resulted in a Chinese mediation to resume ties between Riyadh and Tehran following seven years of estrangement.

Responding to a question on the date of commencing his tasks in Riyadh, within the framework of the Beijing agreement to restore ties between the two countries, Enayati said that both sides approved the nominated ambassadors.

“It is a matter of administrative arrangements. The ambassadors will be sent after concluding these arrangements,” said Enayati.

In an interview with the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency, Enayati highlighted the potential benefits that the rapprochement between Tehran and Riyadh could bring not only to Iran and Saudi Arabia but also to the entire region.

“We believe that the work done between Iran and Saudi Arabia will result in benefits for both countries and for the region,” said Enayati.

He emphasized that the renewed ties between the two countries could have “significant ramifications on regional peace, stability, and independence,” while also promoting a “culture of dialogue” in the region.

The Iranian envoy stated that the regional countries can provide help at this stage by promoting actions oriented towards culture and dialogue and paving the way for comprehensive development, not just military-oriented.

Enayati spoke of “new arrangements in the Gulf region” at the security level. He said that “security should be a more internal issue and that the regional countries should take a bigger share in the territorial regime.”

Saudi Arabia emphasized the need to strengthen the international system’s capacity to maintain global peace and security in line with the United Nations Charter, during a high-level meeting at the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

Representing Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed Al-Khereiji said the growing challenges and ongoing violent developments facing the international community demand the utmost effectiveness from the multilateral system.

The Security Council, as the central body, must engage impartially and objectively with all issues within its mandate, he urged.

Saudi Arabia underscores the importance of combining effectiveness with multilateralism and proper representation in any genuine efforts for reform and global governance, he added.

He reiterated Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the importance of intergovernmental negotiations on reforming the multilateral system, emphasizing that it should take place through the General Assembly, in line with General Assembly Resolution 62/557, which was adopted by consensus.

He highlighted the growing crisis of trust in the United Nations and its bodies, particularly the Security Council, in fulfilling their responsibility to maintain global peace and security and resolve conflicts through peaceful means.

Al-Khereiji reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s call for reforming the Security Council to better reflect the current global reality, make it more effective in responding to international transformations, and boost its efficiency in addressing shared challenges.

Saudi Arabia is fully prepared to work with other member states to achieve this goal, he stressed.
