The United Arab Emirates has allocated $5 million in support of efforts of chief United Nations Coordinator for the UN Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA), Sigrid Kaag, towards the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, state news agency WAM reported on Saturday.

On Friday, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Sigrid Kaag, the United Nations Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, have discussed enhancing relief and medical aid delivery to the Palestinian people in a safe and sustainable manner, WAM said.

They met in Abu Dhabi, where they reviewed the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza as a result of developments in the region, and ways to address its repercussions at an accelerated and coordinated pace, aiming to alleviate civilian suffering and meet their needs.

The importance of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the need to support the agency's humanitarian aid efforts for Palestinian refugees were also discussed, the news agency added.

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani visits Damascus on Thursday, Qatar's Al Jazeera reported, as Syria's new interim government begins a political transition after the opposition factions ousted the Assad regime last year.

Qatar's foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

In January, a US official and a senior diplomat said Qatar planned to help finance a sharp increase in public sector wages pledged by Syria's new government.

Qatar had been lobbying Washington to issue a sanctions exemption for Syria allowing it to provide funding through official channels, the US official and diplomat said.
