US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has expressed concern over the situation in Lebanon, warning against the interference of foreign troops or from resorting to any actions that could threaten Lebanon’s stability.
Tillerson said in a statement on Friday that Washington strongly supports the sovereignty and independence of Lebanon and of its political institutions. It also urges all parties both within Lebanon and outside to respect the integrity and independence of Lebanon’s legitimate national institutions, including the Government of Lebanon and the Lebanese Armed Forces.
He said the US respects outgoing Prime Minister Saad Hariri as a strong partner of the United States.
The US “supports the stability of Lebanon and is opposed to any actions that could threaten that stability,” Tillerson added.
