Hebrew slogans calling for the release of Palestinian teenager Ahed al-Tamimi have been scrawled on the walls of poor neighborhoods in Tel Aviv.

Written in fluent Hebrew, some of the slogans read “Freedom for Ahed al-Tamimi,” “Ahed al-Tamimi is a hero” and “We love you Ahed al-Tamimi.”

The Tel Aviv municipality was quick to erase the writings and police have launched a probe into the matter.

They suspect that Arabs fluent in Hebrew are behind it. They also did not rule out however the possibility that radical Jews may be involved.

An Israeli court had on Monday extended Tamimi’s detention to Wednesday.

Tamimi, 16, was arrested for slapping Israeli soldiers. She was filmed in December outside her family home, pushing, kicking and slapping soldiers, who fended off the blows without retaliating.

The prosecution is demanding that her detention be extended until all judicial measures against her are complete. Her defense has demanded that she be released because it believes that the prosecution is demanding too harsh a sentence.

Her lawyer presented to the court several cases of Jewish settlers who had done much more than slap a soldier and their detention was not extended until their judicial measures were over.

Tamimi should not be discriminated against simply because she is an Arab, she added.

She was indicted earlier this month on several counts, including attacking the soldiers.

The European Union had expressed on Friday its concern over her ongoing detention.

The United Nations warned Saturday that dire fuel shortages in the Gaza Strip had reached "critical levels", threatening to dramatically increase the suffering in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory.

"After almost two years of war, people in Gaza are facing extreme hardships, including widespread food insecurity, seven UN agencies cautioned in a joint statement.

"When fuel runs out, it places an unbearable new burden on a population teetering on the edge of starvation," the statement added.
