Qualifying for the World Cup is a bit like becoming a parent. It can bring joy but opens up an enormous new vista of worries. Ever since Mo Salah scored twice against Congo in October to secure Egypt’s qualification for the tournament, Egyptians have been simultaneously dreaming of glory and fretting about how things could go horribly wrong. When a tight groin made Salah limp out of the first leg of Liverpool’s Champions League flailing of Manchester City last week, an entire nation held its breath. Salah returned to action for this week’s second leg, allowing Egyptians to relax again. But they will resume worrying about him getting injured. So it goes.

You can understand Egyptian fears. Ever since their first participation in the tournament in 1934, the World Cup has caused Pharaohs fans as much angst as a dodgy pyramid scheme.

For that first tournament the Egypt team made a four-day voyage to Italy, scored two goals in four minutes against Hungary but still wound up losing 4-2 amid a pong that could have tickled nostrils as far away as Rhinocoloura, the fabled city of noseless criminals. Hungary’s fourth goal came following a challenge that left Egypt’s goalkeeper, Mustafa Mansour, with a broken hooter, whereas Abdulrahman Fawzi had a goal ruled out for offside despite the fact, according to Egyptian reports, that he scored it after dribbling through the opposition Salah-style from inside his own half. If that goal had stood, perhaps Egypt would have won and Fawzi, who had already netted twice, would have become the first player to score a World Cup hat-trick for an African country, a feat that remains unattained, although El-Hadji Diouf probably says he scored five in Senegal’s victory over Brazil in the 2002 final.

After that 1934 disappointment it was 56 years before Egypt reached the tournament again. In 1990 they opened with an honorable 1-1 draw against European champions Holland but were then grabbed in a headlock by Jack Charlton’s Republic of Ireland before being eliminated by a freak occurrence – a successful mid-tournament tweak by England and the only goal of Mark Wright’s international career. What were the odds?

Egypt then lapsed into freakishness themselves, continually finding barmy ways to avoid qualifying for the tournament despite being the best team in Africa for most of the 21st century.

But now, at last, they are going back. And they’re worried. And not just about Salah’s groin or the state of Ahmed Hegazi’s mind after a season stepping on rakes at West Brom. For there’s also talk now that Egypt’s manager, Héctor Cúper, is about to be poached by a South American country. During his three years at Egypt Cúper has worked wonders of Chris Coleman proportions, devising a game plan based on solidity and giving the ball as quickly as possible to the team’s one magician. Cúper is Argentinian.

According to the Egyptian FA, Cúper is close to agreeing a deal to stay put. “Cúper is not a greedy man and he is not taking advantage of the fact that we need him before the World Cup,” declared the EFA’s Tharwat Sweilam. “He said he loves Egypt and that he wants to stay put. He also said he would give Egypt the priority over any other offer if the financial gaps are not big ... Most probably his contract will be extended before the national team’s next training camp in May.” That should put Egyptian minds at ease. For a few seconds.

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Omar Marmoush ‌from Manchester City on a season-long loan, the Premier League club said on Thursday, with the deal including an obligation to make the Egypt forward's move permanent next summer.

British media said the obligation to buy is for a guaranteed £50 million ($67.96 million), with £10m more in add-ons.

"It feels amazing to be here. I'm so excited to get started with the team and I can't wait to meet the fans," the 27-year-old said in a statement.

"Tottenham Hotspur is one of the biggest clubs in England, if not ‌the world, and ‌the project was very attractive to me.

"I've ‌spoken with the head coach (Roberto De Zerbi), I loved what he had to say and I'm sure our passion for the game will go very well together."

Marmoush had a tale of two seasons at City, impressing in his debut 2024-25 campaign before finding consistent playing time elusive behind established players, including leading striker Erling Haaland, in Pep Guardiola's squad last season.

He scored only three goals ‌in 21 Premier League matches for ‌City last term, a far cry from the seven goals in ‌his first half-season at the Etihad Stadium.

De Zerbi, who took ‌over at Spurs in March and helped them avoid relegation, wanted to add forwards to a rebuilt squad after they added midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes plus defender Jan Paul van Hecke for a ‌combined £237 million.

Spurs have also signed Brazilian winger Savio, formerly known as Savinho, from City in a deal reportedly worth around £75 million and a further £10 million in add-ons.

Marmoush is a versatile forward capable of playing centrally or from the left wing, with the Egyptian expected to receive more playing opportunities under De Zerbi at Tottenham.

Spurs have needed more attacking quality after two difficult seasons in which they finished in a lowly 17th place.

Marmoush represented Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, playing five games, albeit without scoring, as they reached the last 16 before being eliminated by eventual runners-up Argentina.

Tottenham got off to a terrible start in their Premier League opener with a 3-0 drubbing at Brentford. They next host Newcastle United on Saturday.

More Than Goals: What Mourinho Wants from Real Madrid’s Mbappe

The 2026/27 season has barely begun and Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe is already on top of La Liga's goalscoring charts ahead of the visit of promoted side Malaga on Sunday.

The French forward hit a hat-trick as Jose Mourinho's team steamrollered Real Sociedad on Wednesday, securing a second league win from two matches this season.

Mbappe, who won the league's top scorer trophy in both of his two prior seasons at the club, will be licking his lips ready for more with Malaga visiting the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, despite his superbly taken treble, Mourinho said goals are not enough for the forward, who he described as "incredible".

"I prefer 40 (goals) with titles than 60 without titles," Mourinho told reporters.

"I prefer 40 with a lot of work for the team than 60 just playing for himself, as often happens with forwards."

That was not a criticism of Mbappe this season but instead an encouragement for the Frenchman to maintain the level he has shown so far in terms of work-rate.

"I'm very happy with him," continued Mourinho. "From a technical standpoint, there's obviously nothing to say, but in terms of helping the group grow, taking responsibility, working...

"He arrived two days early, and two days early in that pre-season period can mean something positive."

Getting more out of Mbappe, beyond the slew of goals he is guaranteed to provide, may be the key to unlocking a team which boasts great quality and potential but has failed to win a major trophy in the last two seasons.

- New history to create -

"I'm really happy that he made history in the World Cup because there are 25 world champion players, but only one is eternal in football -- the player who has the most goals in the World Cup," said Mourinho, referring to Mbappe's exploits with France this summer.

The 27-year-old won the Golden Boot at the World Cup by notching 10 goals, meaning he has netted 22 at the tournament in his career, keeping him one above Lionel Messi, with both players surpassing Miroslav Klose's previous record of 16.

"I see him really hungry to make history with Real Madrid," continued Mourinho.

Since Mbappe joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, he has watched his former side go on to win the Champions League twice, while Los Blancos' rivals Barcelona have claimed both La Liga titles in that time.

Madrid failed to win a single trophy last season and Mbappe's only silverware with the club is the 2024 UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup, despite scoring 86 goals in just 103 appearances for the club in his first two campaigns.

"This year, we have to win, that's what we all want, and that's what we're going to do," said a determined Mbappe on Real Madrid TV at the start of the season.

The way to do that, Mourinho believes, is through teamwork.

"I always say that with these players, you have to teach them to play as a team and teach them very little from an individual perspective," added the veteran Portuguese coach.

Mourinho, 63, may have the aura and steel needed to bring the club's biggest stars together and get them pulling in the same direction, despite his own struggles in recent years away from Europe's biggest clubs.

During a chaotic 2025/26 campaign it did not always feel like that was the case at Madrid, as Xabi Alonso and then Alvaro Arbeloa came and went, Mbappe's goals alone unable to keep them afloat.

Malaga will provide another opportunity for Mbappe to add to his ever-growing numbers on Sunday, but Mourinho will be looking for more than another hat-trick.

Arsenal’s Rivals Seek to Lay Down Markers After Tough Starts

If anything can be drawn from the ‌results of the opening round of Premier League fixtures it was that champions Arsenal are categorically the team to beat and the those expected to challenge them must quickly get their acts together.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United endured difficult starts to varying degrees and will be keen to give Arsenal something to ponder before Mikel Arteta's side travel to troubled Aston Villa on Monday.

While City did begin the post-Pep Guardiola era with a last-gasp 2-1 home victory against Bournemouth, it was hardly convincing. Enzo Maresca's side kick off the weekend's action with a Friday night assignment at Crystal Palace -- a fixture that has been kind to City in recent years.

They are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League games at Selhurst Park, winning eight and drawing three, and will be taking on ‌a Palace team ‌still adapting to life since the departure of coach Oliver Glasner at ‌the end of last season.

City will be boosted by the availability of their new Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi who joined this week from Lille for a reported fee of £86 million ($117 million).

"He is ready, he was working with his former club so he is fit," Maresca said on Thursday.

Manchester United stalled on the grid in their season-opener as they went down 2-0 at promoted Hull City -- a result that acted as reality check after a summer of optimism.

United will be keen to engage the gears as they host another promoted side, Ipswich Town, on Sunday.

LIVERPOOL SEEK FIRST WIN

Liverpool needed a stoppage-time ‌penalty by Dominik Szoboszlai at Newcastle United to avoid a ‌losing start to Andoni Iraola's reign and will seek their first win as they host Nottingham Forest in ‌Saturday's lunchtime kickoff.

"It is true that we did not win, we drew 2-2. You cannot ‌change this, but I felt we did a lot of good things in that first game," Iraola, who will be hoping the club can deliver the signing of France forward Bradley Barcola, said.

If Arsenal's 3-0 cruise at home to Coventry City underlined why they will be favorites to retain the title, Chelsea emerged from ‌the opening skirmishes as potential challengers after an impressive Cole Palmer-inspired victory at Fulham on Monday.

New manager Xavi Alonso's side will face a tough test at home to a Brighton & Hove Albion outfit who demolished Aston Villa 4-0 on the opening weekend.

Villa, who finished fourth last season and won the Europa League, have been arguably the biggest talking point at the start of the new campaign after the rapid break-up of Unai Emery's squad.

Only five of the players that started the Europa League final against Freiburg on that memorable night in Istanbul in May began the match at Brighton.

Emery can only hope that the likes of new signings Johan Manzambi and Alejandro Garnacho can help to lift the gloom, although a visit from Arsenal hardly bodes well.

Big-spending Tottenham Hotspur were thrashed 3-0 at Brentford on the opening weekend but with new signings Savio and Omar Marmoush back in tandem after joining from Manchester City, they will expect to bounce back at home to Newcastle on Sunday.

After a chastening return to the topflight at Arsenal, Coventry will host their first Premier League game for a quarter of a century as they welcome fellow promoted side Hull.
