Nidaa Tounes Appoints Riahi Secretary-General
Nidaa Tounes announced Friday appointing businessman Slim Riahi as new secretary-general for the party, following the merging between Nidaa Tounes and Free Patriotic Union.
The former president of the Free Patriotic Union has become the first secretary-general for Nidaa Tounes after former secretary-general Mohsen Marzouk withdrew since 2015 to establish a new party called Machrou Tounes.
Riahi, 46, will also be the head of the party’s political divan that is composed of representatives from the merged political authorities of the two parties.
Observers see that Riahi lacks wide political expertise but has appeared more in the political scene after the revolution of 2011 that ousted the regime of former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Nidaa Tounes seeks to restore its weight in the political scene, especially after the series of resignations since the party’s victory in the 2014 elections. It lost half its deputies in the parliament due to an internal crisis, however, the merging enabled Nidaa Tounes to raise its parliament bloc to 55 deputies.
