The Palestinian Central Council (PCC) will discuss during its meeting on Oct. 28 a request to dissolve the Legislative Council, according to senior Palestinian official Salim Zanoun.
Zanoun, the president of the Palestinian National Council (PNC), said on Monday that the request by Fatah’s Revolutionary Council (FRC) to the PCC to dissolve the Legislative Council would be discussed as an emergency item on the agenda of the PCC, end of October.
If a decision is made to dissolve the Legislative Council, the PCC will be directing towards Hamas a new blow, which won’t be the harsher if it decides to stop funding the Gaza Strip entirely. The PCC is in fact considering proposals to halt funding for the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas’ refusal to hand over the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Authority.
An Egyptian security delegation led by Major General Ahmed Abdel Khaliq, the official of the Palestinian file in the Egyptian intelligence service, arrived on Monday in Gaza on a second visit within several days as part of intensive Egyptian and international efforts to reach a new truce agreement in the Gaza Strip.
The delegation entered Gaza through the Israeli Erez crossing, and immediately met with Hamas leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh, head of the movement’s political bureau, and Yehya al-Sinwar, the head of the movement in the sector.
Palestinian sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that the delegation mainly focused on convincing Hamas to maintain the current state of calm so that further steps could be made.
The Egyptian delegation met with the Hamas leadership last Thursday and then held talks with Israeli National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and senior officials of the Shin Bet security service within the framework of contacts aimed at reaching a truce in Gaza.
The delegation told Hamas leaders on the first visit that Cairo would not be able to prevent Israel from launching attacks on the Gaza Strip if the demonstrations took a violent turn. The movement responded that it was prepared to gradually reduce the size of the demonstrations if progress was achieved in easing the siege on Gaza.
