Bahrain: 3 Sentenced on Terror Charges

A court in Bahrain has handed prison sentences to three Bahrainis and revoked their citizenship after they were convicted on charges of joining a terrorist cell.

One of the three men, who belong to Saraya al-Muqawama (Resistance Brigade), was present in court, while the other two, believed to have fled to Iraq, were sentenced in absentia.

The men were accused of several “terrorist crimes” and of attempting to carry out bombings in Bahrain, the transfer of bomb-making material and of putting an officer at the interior ministry under surveillance in an attempt to assassinate him.

The court sentenced two of the suspects to ten years in jail while the third received a seven-year prison sentence. It also revoked their citizenship.

The rulings are subject to appeal.
