Dependence on the Internet during the new coronavirus crisis has prompted more demands in Egypt to expedite the electronic transformation at government institutions.
MPs and telecommunication experts have underlined the need to “set a plan for electronic connectivity and relying on electronic means of communication to ensure speedy procedures in implementing services.”
They stressed that the digital transformation of public sectors and government institutions “will contribute to providing better, faster and less costly services to citizens.”
The cabinet’s media center announced earlier in September the allocation of EGP7.8 billion in the 2019-20 fiscal budget for updating the state’s information infrastructure and digital content.
MP Hussein Issa, chairman of the parliament's Planning and Budget Committee, highlighted the importance of benefitting from the coronavirus crisis to introduce a shift towards electronic management.
“Digital transformation will include the redistribution of roles within institutions, by depending on digitization to facilitate several administrative tasks.”
In May, parliament Speaker Dr. Ali Abdel Aal called on the Minister of Planning, Dr. Hala al-Saeed, to seize the opportunity presented by the crisis to support electronic connectivity between ministries and the electronic management structure.
The parliament’s Local Administration Committee had prepared a draft law, which calls on the government to provide automated services in all the local administration departments.
