Former Saudi Arabian Oil Minister Sheikh Zaki Yamani passed away in London on Tuesday aged 91.

He will be buried at the Jannat Al Muallaa Cemetery in the holy city of Makkah.

Yamani became oil minister in 1962 and would lead the ministry until 1986, serving as secretary-general of the nascent oil cartel OPEC throughout his term in office.

Yamani was born in Makkah in 1930. He earned a bachelor's degree in law at King Fouad I University in Cairo in 1952 and master’s degrees in law at New York University and Harvard.

He worked as legal aide at the Saudi cabinet in 1957 before becoming minister of state and cabinet minister in 1960.

In 1990, Yamani founded the Center for Global Energy Studies, a London-based market analysis group claiming to provide objective information on energy issues.
