Tunisia’s scientific committee to fight the COVID-19 pandemic said the epidemiological situation continues to deteriorate in the country after 17 states and 95 areas were announced at "high" and "extremely high" risk levels.
In this regard, Director of the National Observatory of New and Emerging Diseases Nissaf Ben Alaya pointed to the remarkable deterioration of many indicators at the national level in April.
She said 144 cases of the UK strain were reported in 16 states, which would lead to an increase in the number of cases and deaths as observed in some European countries.
Ben Alaya also highlighted the increase in the rate of positive cases to 22.9 percent amid a surge in hospitalizations and death rates.
The Health Ministry registered 34 new deaths on April 3, raising the death toll to 8,965 since the beginning of the pandemic.
It also recorded 1,709 new COVID-19 cases, raising infection tally to 260,044, including 219,035 recoveries.
According to the Ministry, there are currently 1,480 coronavirus hospitalized patients, 352 of whom are in intensive care units, while 111 are on ventilators.
Health officials indicate a challenging situation and expect an increase in the number of deaths in the future.
