Most fish rely on water to feed, using suction to capture their prey. A new study, however, shows that snowflake morays can grab and swallow prey on land without water thanks to an extra set of jaws in their throats.

After a moray eel captures prey with its first set of jaws, a second set of "pharyngeal jaws" then reaches out to grasp the struggling prey and pull it down into the moray's throat.

Rita Mehta, an associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at University of California, Santa Cruz, first described this astonishing feeding mechanism in a 2007 Nature paper.

The new study, published June 7 in the Journal of Experimental Biology, shows that these pharyngeal jaws enable at least one species of moray to feed on land.

"Most fishes really need water to feed. This is the first example of a fish that can feed on land without relying on water," Mehta said.

Reports of snowflake morays coming out of the water to grab crabs on the shore prompted her to take a closer look.

The “Forest Wonders” zone has emerged as one of the most popular family attractions at Jeddah Season 2025, held under the slogan “Jeddah is Different,” offering visitors an immersive, forest-inspired experience that blends entertainment, exploration, and learning in a safe and engaging environment.

Located opposite City Walk, the enclosed, air-conditioned space covers more than 7,500 square meters and is designed to replicate the atmosphere of a natural forest, creating a realistic and visually captivating setting.

Since the start of the season, the attraction has drawn large numbers of visitors every day, the Saudi Press Agency said on Saturday.

Running until August 30, “Forest Wonders” features 16 wildlife-themed zones, more than 200 animals representing various species, and 11 interactive experiences such as the Reptile Cave, Cat Lounge, Bird Garden, Deer Experience, Meerkat Experience, and Secret Garden. Visitors can also enjoy nine animal feeding activities and four skill-based games that combine learning with fun.

The initiative reflects Jeddah Season’s strategy to offer world-class entertainment that enhances family tourism, supports domestic travel, and aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals of diversifying entertainment options and establishing Jeddah as a premier cultural and tourism destination.
