Iran’s role in Yemen remains negative, said a US official while pointing out that Tehran has chosen to fuel the conflict that has been going on in the war-torn country for nearly seven years.

This makes finding a final and swift solution for Yemen a priority, added the official, who requested anonymity.

Speaking to a group of reporters in Riyadh on Wednesday evening, the US official confirmed that UN Security Council resolution 2216 is the primary framework for dealing with the Yemeni crisis despite the difficulty of implementing it on the ground.

“I know that it is difficult to implement in reality, but we have to ask: How can an armed militia, as the Houthis operate in Yemen, participate in the peaceful phase,” said the official.

“This issue can be dealt with when we reach the negotiation, and our efforts are focused on bringing the parties together to negotiate,” he added.

He considered the visit of US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to Saudi Arabia about two weeks ago very constructive. Sullivan had met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

“I see a strong convergence in the Saudi-American vision on Yemen,” said the official about Sullivan’s visit.

He stressed that the Biden administration prioritizes resolving the Yemeni crisis in cooperation with the Yemeni government, Saudi Arabia, and partners in the region.

“We know that this cannot be done on our own,” said the official about US efforts.

Clarifying that the US is sure that there is no military solution to the conflict in Yemen, the official stressed the need to “create conditions for Yemeni parties to discuss their future.”

“The goal is not only a cease-fire, but we also want to see Yemen turn from conflict to peace.”

When asked about Iran’s role in Yemen, the official said: “We did not see any positive role in the conflict for Iran.”

“Instead, it chose to fuel the conflict, and therefore the US feels the importance of quickly resolving the crisis, as a result of the pressure imposed on the Yemenis.”

China said Wednesday it was in contact with the United States and Russia about a possible three-way leaders' meeting on the sidelines of a regional gathering in Shenzhen this month.

"China is in communication on a China-Russia-US heads of state meeting with relevant parties," foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a regular briefing when asked about the possible trilateral summit on the sidelines of the APEC meeting on November 18-19.

The Kremlin said on October 21 that the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US and Russian counterparts Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin -- which would be a first -- was "being prepared".

Xi, 73, and Trump, 80, have already met twice this year -- most recently with the Chinese leader visiting the White House in September -- and they are due to come together again at a G20 summit in Miami in December.

The two leaders vowed to extend a trade truce they agreed in October 2025 and to explore tariff cuts on $30 billion of goods on each side.

Trump last met Putin, 74, in person in Alaska in August 2025.

Xi and Putin have met dozens of times, most recently in May when the Russian leader visited Beijing.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned last month that a trilateral summit could offer a platform to redistribute influence, similar to after World War II.

"We really don't want this to turn into 'Yalta 2, 3, 4', with a redistribution of influence," he said, referring to the 1945 summit of Soviet, US and British leaders on dividing up the post-war map.

"Russia wants this meeting more than anyone," Zelensky said, warning against handing Moscow "another major diplomatic advantage".

China said on Wednesday that avoiding a return to hostilities in the Middle East was a "top priority" in its diplomatic efforts with countries in the region.

Beijing has stepped up efforts in recent days to resolve the eight-month-long crisis after US President Donald Trump issued a fresh war threat against Iran over the weekend.

"The top priority is to avoid the resumption of hostilities in the Middle East that would bring disaster to the region's people," Beijing's foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a news conference on Wednesday.

Beijing will "support Iran and the US in resolving disputes through negotiations, promote finding a political settlement to the Yemen issue, to help reach a proper and comprehensive solution for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz", she added.

China, a top economic partner of Iran, hosted back-to-back meetings on Monday with Iranian and Omani officials in Beijing, urging a return to the negotiating table.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for shipping lanes to be protected and urged a "spirit of reason" in a meeting with Iran's Ali Bagheri Kani, the deputy secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping also met Oman's sultan for talks in Beijing this week, where he warned against the Middle East becoming a "wrestling ground for major-country rivalry".

Later this month, Beijing will send its Middle East envoy to the region as a part of "shuttle diplomacy visits... aimed at promoting peace talks (and) easing tensions", a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson told a news briefing.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk joked on Wednesday about Republicans' defeat in US midterm elections after spending hundreds of millions of dollars to help the party.

Democrats seized control of the US Congress on Tuesday, capturing both the Senate and House of Representatives in a stunning rejection of President Donald Trump's political agenda.

"Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn't work this time," Musk said on X, including the shrug emoji.

Musk contributed nearly half a billion dollars to Republican political efforts, making him the largest individual contributor in a federal election cycle since unlimited election spending was allowed in 2010, according to campaign finance tracker OpenSecrets.

His donations have mostly gone to his Republican-leaning America PAC, as well as to the Republican Senate Leadership Fund super PAC.

The SLF used Musk's $158 million in donations in September to support Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate candidate in Texas.

Democrat James Talarico defeated Paxton, a close ally of Trump, to become the first Democrat to win statewide office in Texas since 1994.

Talarico took aim at Musk at a victory rally in Austin.

"In this race, we went up against our own Goliaths. The richest man in the world, the most powerful man in the world and the entire Washington, DC establishment," he said.
