Tennis legend Manuel Santana, the first Spanish Wimbledon champion, died Saturday at the age of 83, the Madrid Masters, tournament of which he was honorary president announced.

"Thank you a thousand times for what you have done for our country and for having opened the way for so many people. You have always been a point of reference, a friend and a person very close to everyone," tweeted Rafael Nadal, the only other Spanish man to win Wimbledon. "We will miss you."

'Manolo' Santana won four major singles titles. He took the French Open in 1961 and 1964, the US Open at Forest Hills in 1965 and Wimbledon in 1966 wearing a Real Madrid shirt.

"His love for the club inspired him to win Wimbledon in 1966 in the Real Madrid shirt, making him the first Spanish tennis player to win this Grand Slam," wrote the club on their web site.

He also won the gold medal in singles and the silver in doubles in Mexico City in 1968, where tennis was included as a demonstration event.

He captained Spain in the Davis Cup between 1980 and 1985, and again between 1995 and 1999.

The president of the Spanish government Pedro Sanchez lamented the loss of a "legend".

Spanish media reported that Santana suffered from Parkinson's disease and had been living in Marbella, on the Mediterranean coast.

Liverpool have signed Hungary left back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, the Premier League champions said on Thursday.

The Merseyside club agreed a 40 million-pound ($54.9 million) fee to recruit the 21-year-old on a five-year contract, their third signing of the transfer window after midfielder Florian Wirtz and wing-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.

"It's a real honor for me, a privilege to come to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, (the) biggest club in England. I'm just really, really happy and excited," Kerkez said in a statement, Reuters reported.

"I'll go home and in my hometown enjoy a few days, and then I can't really wait to come back and put the training kit on and start to train and prepare for the season."

Kerkez joined Liverpool after two impressive seasons at Bournemouth, in which he made 74 appearances.

Born in Serbia, Kerkez has earned 23 caps for Hungary since making his debut against Germany in 2022.
