Mercedes have many more upgrades to come as they seek to close in on Formula One leaders Red Bull and Ferrari, strategy boss James Vowles said on Wednesday.

The defending world champions brought new parts to last weekend's French Grand Prix and Vowles said they were "incremental".

"They are small steps that were added to the car but the important point is that we have plans to introduce far, far more across the races that follow," he said in a debrief conducted by the team.

"We are not going to be able in one go just to catch up and be with Ferrari and Red Bull.

"But hopefully as you have seen across the season so far, we are incrementally closing that gap down and we have more to come."

Seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton finished second to Red Bull's Max Verstappen in France, after Ferrari's Charles Leclerc crashed out, with Mercedes team mate George Russell third.

The team have been notably more competitive in races than in Saturday qualifying.

Mercedes are third overall, 126 points adrift of leaders Red Bull and 44 behind Ferrari, in the constructors' standings. The 13th race of the season is in Hungary this weekend.

Nottingham Forest have signed Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz from Juventus on an initial season-long loan with a conditional obligation to make it a permanent deal next summer, the Premier League club said.

The 27-year-old, who won Olympic gold with Brazil in Tokyo, spent one season at Juventus after leaving Aston Villa for a fee of around 50 million euros ($57.94 million) on a five-year contract.

However, he made only 27 appearances for the Turin side.

"I am really happy to be here, it's a big club and I decided to come here because I can see the ambition the club has," Reuters quoted Douglas Luiz as saying in a statement late on Thursday.

Having started his career with Brazil's Vasco da Gama, Douglas Luiz moved to Manchester City in 2017 but did not play for them and was loaned to Girona for two seasons before joining Villa in 2019.

Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League last season, visit Crystal Palace on Sunday.
