Quarrel between Kuwaiti Students Sparks Controversy in Egypt

Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday voiced dismay and rejection of an assault by Egyptian policemen on several Kuwaiti students in Egypt’s northern city of Alexandria. On Saturday, a quarrel had erupted between the students at a shopping mall in Alexandria.

The Kuwaiti embassy in Cairo released a statement on Saturday saying it was closely investigating the incident. It said it was making calls with relevant Egyptian authorities to ensure that the Kuwaiti students were being treated properly.

All the students involved in the quarrel were released after having been arrested by authorities, affirmed the embassy.

Moreover, the embassy renewed the call for its nationals living in Egypt, particularly students, to abide by the laws and regulations there.

Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi communicated with Egyptian Ambassador in Kuwait Osama Shaltout, calling on Egyptian authorities to take official and legal action against the policemen assaulting the Kuwaiti students.

The Kuwaiti official also called on Egyptian authorities to carry out investigations into the case, bring the perpetrators to accountability and take necessary measures to deter such unacceptable individual behaviors that do not reflect fraternal relations between Kuwait and Egypt.

Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Al-Khuraiji visited Ankara on Wednesday and met with Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and his counterparts Burhanettin Duran and Nuh Yilmaz.

Al-Khuraiji addressed relations between Saudi Arabia and Türkiye during his meetings, attended by the Saudi Ambassador to Türkiye, Fahd bin Asaad Abu Al-Nasr.

The Saudi deputy minister also held political consultations between the Saudi and Turkish foreign ministries in Ankara with Yilmaz.

During the meetings, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye discussed strengthening their bilateral relations and advancing cooperation. The officials also addressed issues of mutual interest and the latest regional developments.

In mid-July, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering ties across various sectors, including the activation of a joint coordination council.

The announcement followed a meeting in Istanbul between Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

On his part, Fidan participated in an expanded international meeting on Syria hosted by Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

The gathering, chaired by Prince Faisal bin Farhan, underscored Riyadh’s pivotal role in the region and its steadfast support for ensuring Syria’s security, stability, and territorial integrity, free from foreign interference.
