Gulf and British officials have carried out intensive workshops and meetings in the past two days in London to discuss means of supporting stability in the Gulf region, especially in Iraq and Yemen.
Gulf Cooperation Council's Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Negotiations Dr. Abdulaziz Hamad Aluwaisheg said that the GCC states consider the process of stability and development in regional countries a very important matter.
He referred to the decision of the Supreme Council at its 36th session in 2016, which called for the preparation of an international conference for the reconstruction of Yemen, the development of a practical program to rehabilitate the Yemeni economy and facilitate its integration with the Gulf economy to achieve the desired peace and Kuwait’s declaration to host early 2018 an international conference of donors for the reconstruction of Iraqi cities that were liberated from ISIS.
Aluwaisheg said the workshops, which concluded on Wednesday, discussed the mechanism of supporting stability between the GCC and the United Kingdom, in which a number of senior officials from the General Secretariat of the GCC participated, in addition to the Gulf Police, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom.
The workshop discussed mechanisms to support stability, including means of strengthening government action among the various sectors working in ministries and development institutions to create an appropriate environment in areas of conflict and achieve security and stability in them, Aluwaisheg said.
He explained that the workshop discussed the negative effects of instability in fragile states that have suffered from extreme conflicts and their impact on surrounding peoples and countries and the implementation of successful experiences in supporting stability in some countries such as Yemen and Iraq, stressing that the GCC states are exerting efforts to achieve the security and stability of all regional countries and to preserve their territorial integrity and sovereignty.
One of the workshops was held at the Embassy of Kuwait in London and discussed enhancing the work between Gulf States and Britain.
Kuwaiti Ambassador to London Khaled al-Duwaisan stressed the keenness of the GCC to enhance joint cooperation in various fields with the British side to continue implementing the outcomes of the Gulf-British Summit held in Bahrain in December 2016.
