Iran summoned Kuwait’s envoy in Tehran on Saturday to protest against Kuwaiti officials hosting an “anti-Iranian” meeting, Iran’s foreign ministry said in a statement on its website.

The ministry added that the meeting included a representative of a “terrorist group”, a reference to the Iranian opposition.

A strongly-worded complaint was submitted to the charge d’affaires, reported the Mehr news agency.

Director general for Gulf Affairs of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Alireza Enayati, condemned Kuwait’s actions as “blatant” meddling in Iran’s internal affairs and a violation of good neighborliness.

An Iranian opposition website had released images of Kuwait National Assembly Speaker Marzouq al-Ghanim meeting with Hakim al-Kaabi, a member of the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz. The meeting was attended by MP Abdullah Fahad al-Enezi, said an Iranian opposition website.

The Iranian officials were in Kuwait to attend a conference in support of the Ahvaz.

“The conference underlines the fraternal ties that bind the Arab people with the occupied Ahvaz,” read a description of the event on the opposition website.

Enezi meanwhile, said the meeting was strictly aimed at discussing Kaabi’s master’s thesis on Democracy in Kuwait, denying that the officials had discussed any other affair. Kaabi had requested a meeting was Ghanim on the sidelines of his visit to Kuwait to address his thesis that he is preparing in Germany.

Kuwait's foreign ministry issued on Sunday a circular indicating that it had listed eight hospitals in Lebanon as part of regulations related to "combating terrorism.”

Lebanon's health ministry expressed surprise and said it would seek clarification.

It said it received the Kuwaiti statement "with great surprise", adding it had not been provided with "any information or notification from any Kuwaiti entity about this matter.”

"The hospitals mentioned in the statement are registered with the syndicate of private hospitals in Lebanon and carry out their role in providing treatment and health services to all Lebanese without exception," the ministry statement said.

It called the facilities "an essential part of the Lebanese health system,” and said it would contact the relevant authorities to request clarification and "protect Lebanon's health system.”

It noted that "Kuwait has numerous joint projects with the ministry... and has been among the most prominent countries that have stood by the health system during the successive crises that Lebanon has faced.”

The latest move was "unprecedented and inconsistent" with the Gulf country's usual approach, it added.
