Yemen's Southern Transitional Council spokesman Nizar Haitham reaffirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that the STC’s stance on implementing the Riyadh Agreement remains unchanged.

Haitham blamed the internationally recognized government for "unjustified procrastination" in implementing the Riyadh deal that would give the southerners a 50 percent representation in a new government.

"Firm decisions must be made to appoint a shared government, and a governor and head of security for Aden," Haitham said.

The STC spokesman welcomed the Saudi call to return to implementing the Riyadh Agreement which the Council signed with the legitimate government last November.

He called for the implementation of the provisions of the political part of the Agreement immediately and without delay.

The STC’s announcement of a plan for self-rule and widespread deployment of STC fighters across Aden caused concern in the international community. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the Arab Coalition supporting the Yemeni government in its battle against the Houthis all called for a return to dialogue and implementing the Riyadh Agreement.

“We support the Riyadh Agreement and hope that the Arab Coalition will pressure parties to implement the political part of it without delay,” Haitham said.

UN Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths had said that the STC’s announcement of self-rule was disappointing, calling for implementing the Riyadh Agreement.

The states that sponsor the peace process in Yemen, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Gulf Cooperation Council urged all parties to return immediately to implement the Agreement and give priority to the interests of the Yemeni people.

Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned the terrorist and criminal attacks launched by Yemen’s Houthis against civilian and economic facilities in the cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran, which injured 73 civilians, including women and children.

This came in a speech delivered by Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil during an emergency session of the UN Security Council convened to discuss the Houthi militia’s attacks against the Kingdom.

Alwasil warned of the seriousness of the Houthi escalation and its repercussions for regional security. He stressed that the attacks threaten not only the Kingdom’s security, citizens, and assets, but also international navigation and trade in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

He called on the UN Security Council to adopt a clear, firm stance on these attacks and fulfill its responsibility to maintain international peace and security.

He also stressed the need to ensure the full implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions and to halt all forms of support that enable the Houthi militia to continue its hostile actions and attacks, which threaten regional security and international shipping lanes.

Alwasil reaffirmed the Kingdom’s legitimate right to defend itself and protect its security, sovereignty, citizens, residents, and national assets, in line with the UN Charter and international law.

He stressed the Kingdom’s steadfast position regarding Yemen, based on preserving its unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

He stressed the Kingdom’s continued support for a comprehensive, sustainable, Yemeni-led political solution to the Yemeni crisis that achieves security and stability and fulfills the aspirations of the Yemeni people.
