Hundreds of Israeli settlers stormed the archaeological site of Sebastia, north of Nablus city, holding prayers and calling for controlling the site.
The settlers also urged the Israeli army to prevent Palestinians from entering the area and ban them from raising Palestine's flag.
Sebastia mayor Mohammad Azzem told official Palestinian news agency WAFA that the settlers forced their way into the site under the protection of the Israeli military.
"The site has become a scene for daily settler targeting and encroachments," he stressed.
Sebastia is a small historical town located on a hill with panoramic views across the West Bank and has a population of some 3,000 Palestinians.
Palestinians complain that Israeli settlers have repeatedly attacked the town and fenced parts of its antiquities, where they hold religious rituals.
According too WAFA, Israel has been attempting to take over the town, which has become a site of heated cultural conflict, preventing the Palestinians from conducting restoration works at the site.
