Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri promised on Tuesday that a new cabinet would see the light by Christmas, expressing optimism following his one-hour meeting with President Michel Aoun at Baabda Palace.
“We decided to meet tomorrow, but we will not announce the time for security reasons,” he said, adding that the two leaders would hold successive talks to come up with a government lineup by Friday.
Hariri’s announcement came a few days after Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai and General Security chief Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim mediated separately to break the stalemate over the formation of a new government.
Sources close to the Presidential Palace described the Aoun-Hariri meeting as "positive." However, in remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat, they ruled out the formation of a new cabinet on Friday.
“An in-depth discussion happened between the two men and Aoun asked Hariri to reconsider the last list of cabinet members and the fair representation of sects before meeting with him again,” the sources said.
This is the 13th meeting between the two leaders since Hariri was named to form the next government two months ago.
Last week, disputes emerged between the two sides as Aoun and his son-in-law, head of the Free Patriotic Movement and MP Gebran Bassil, insisted on getting veto power in an 18-member cabinet, a request that both Hariri and Rai rejected.
Also, reports said that one of the main obstacles to the cabinet formation is the determination of both Aoun and Bassil to name the justice, interior, and defense ministers.
Hariri is against granting the three portfolios to Aoun’s team. He had proposed the defense ministry to be from the FPM's share, while keeping the interior ministry with al-Mustaqbal Movement led by Hariri.
Also, the PM-designated has suggested that the two sides consult on naming a figure to head the justice ministry.
