"The Fantastic Four: First Steps," Disney's hotly anticipated reboot of the Marvel Comics superhero franchise, conquered the North American weekend box office, earning $118 million and sidelining "Superman," industry estimates showed Sunday.

"Fantastic Four" -- starring actor-of-the-moment Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Emmy winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn ("Stranger Things') -- tells the story of a team of heroes trying to save a retro-futuristic world from the evil Galactus.

"This is an outstanding opening," said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. "'Fantastic Four' was a modest and struggling superhero series; it just caught up with the biggest and the best."

"Superman," the latest big-budget action film featuring the iconic superhero from Warner Bros. and DC Studios, slipped to second place at $24.9 million, Exhibitor Relations said.

That puts the global take of the film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, over the $500 million mark, AFP said.

"Jurassic World: Rebirth" -- the latest installment in the blockbuster dinosaur saga -- finished in third place at $13 million. Its worldwide total stands at $672.5 million.

The Universal film, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali, takes viewers to an abandoned island research facility, where secrets -- and genetically mutated dinosaurs -- are lurking.

"F1: The Movie," the Apple and Warner Bros. flick starring Brad Pitt as a washed-up Formula One driver who gets one last shot at redemption, moved up to fourth place at $6.2 million.

"Smurfs," the latest film featuring the adorable blue creatures and starring Rihanna as Smurfette, slipped to fifth place in only its second week in theaters with $5.4 million in North American ticket sales.

"The box office is on an excellent run that started two weeks ago," Gross said.

"These are not the good old days, but 'Fantastic Four' and 'Superman' are performing extremely well. Superheroes are showing some swagger, and it's good news for the industry."

AMC Entertainment beat quarterly revenue estimates on Tuesday, as a recovering box office and strong demand for its premium movie formats helped the cinema chain draw more moviegoers.

Shares of the Leawood, Kansas-based company rose over 2% in extended trading.

The results suggest AMC's strategy to lean into its network of premium large format screens is paying off, allowing it to capture a larger share of a recovering market, Reuters reported.

The company benefited from a stronger film slate in early 2026, including Ryan Gosling-starrer "Project Hail Mary."

The theater chain reported first-quarter revenue of $1.05 billion compared with analysts' average estimate of $968.5 million, according to data compiled by LSEG.

AMC has focused on maximizing revenue from moviegoers through innovative pricing and its popular loyalty programs.

The theater operator also announced "Arena One at AMC," a live entertainment platform launching in June, transforming AMC theater auditoriums into interactive, real-time "arenas."

The exhibitor has also been expanding its footprint of premium screens, including IMAX and Dolby Cinema, as well as its own "XL" branded screens.

"We are optimistic about the entire 2026 film slate, especially in the second half of 2026, which we believe will see more continued robust growth, adding up to a record post-pandemic box office for full year 2026," CEO Adam Aron said.

AMC posted a loss of 36 cents per share, in line with estimates.

Actor Blake Lively and "It Ends with Us" co-star Justin Baldoni on Monday settled their acrimonious years-long legal battle, avoiding a costly civil trial.

A joint statement provided to AFP said the parties had resolved their dispute -- launched after Lively accused Baldoni of inappropriate on-set behavior -- without disclosing any settlement figure.

"The end product -- the movie 'It Ends with Us' -- is a source of pride to all of us who worked to bring it to life," Baldoni and Lively's attorneys said in a joint statement.

"We acknowledge the process presented challenges and recognize concerns raised by Ms. Lively deserved to be heard... It is our sincere hope that this brings closure and allows all involved to move forward constructively and in peace."

Hours after the announcement that the case was settled, Lively was all smiles as she unexpectedly appeared at the Met Gala in New York in a full ball gown that erupted in a cloud of pink, purple and yellow tulle.

Baldoni and the studio Wayfarer had previously countersued Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds with claims of extortion and defamation, but a judge dismissed those claims last year.

Wayfarer previously insisted that neither the studio, its executives, nor its PR team did anything to retaliate against Lively.

A judge dismissed some of Lively's claims, but upheld her allegations of retaliation, which would have proceeded to trial on May 18.

Based on a best-selling novel by the US writer Colleen Hoover, "It Ends with Us" made more than $350 million at the box office in 2024, making it one of the biggest hits of the year.

American actress Demi Moore, still riding high from the late-career boost of her Oscar-nominated turn in "The Substance", will join the jury for the Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off next week, organizers announced on Monday.

The film extravaganza on the French Riviera, one of the world's most important annual cinema events, hands out a host of prizes, including the prestigious Palme d'Or for best film, decided by a nine-person jury.

Moore, 63, along with Chinese filmmaker Chloe Zhao, whose films from "Nomadland" to "Hamnet" have become awards-season favorites, will add some A-list sparkle to the jury, which also includes Ivorian-American actor Isaach de Bankole, who is set to play in the upcoming third installment of the "Dune" franchise.

As previously announced, the jury will be headed by arthouse South Korean director Park Chan-Wook ("Oldboy").

The other jury members are Irish-Ethiopian actor Ruth Negga, Belgian director Laura Wandel, Chilean director Diego Cespedes, Irish screenwriter Paul Laverty and Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard.

The Cannes Festival runs from May 12 to 23.
