The General Authority for Land and Sea Ports announced on Wednesday the arrival of the first direct shipment of agricultural products from South America and Europe at Tartus Port, just two days after Western sanctions were lifted.
In a statement, the Authority said this marks the first shipment to enter Syrian ports directly, without transiting through Türkiye or Lebanon.
“The vessel MJ Sofia docked carrying more than 19,000 tons of Romanian barley supplied by the US-based company, AD. It marks the first consignment to enter Syria directly through Türkiye or Lebanon,” the Authority statement noted.
On Monday, the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced the removal of sanctions regulations imposed on Syria from the Federal Code of Laws, explaining that the decision will take effect the next day.
The Department said in a statement posted on its website that OFAC made the necessary amendments to remove the sanctions on Syria from the Federal Code, pursuant to Executive Order 14312 issued on June 30.
It said developments in Syria over the six months, including the positive actions taken by the new Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, pushed the US administration to reassess its relationship with Damascus.
