The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced that Saudi Arabia will host the next session of the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development (MONDIACULT) in 2029. The announcement was made during the current session held in Spain.
Minister of Culture Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan welcomed the announcement, stressing the strength of the partnership with UNESCO and underlining the Kingdom’s commitment to advancing cultural development, reported the Saudi Press Agency on Wednesday.
MONDIACULT is a global platform for dialogue on culture and the development of cultural policies. The first conference was held in Mexico in 1982. The Kingdom played a key role in reviving MONDIACULT by supporting Mexico in hosting the 2022 session and by chairing the regional consultations for the Arab region.
Hosting MONDIACULT 2029 is expected to generate significant benefits for Saudi Arabia by stimulating cultural innovation and creativity and contributing to the shaping of future cultural policies.
It reflects the Kingdom’s broader efforts on national, regional, and international levels to reinforce the role of culture in sustainable development. Among these efforts was its leadership in convening the first-ever meeting of culture ministers in the history of the G20 during its presidency in 2020 and introducing the cultural track into the G20 agenda.
