The surprise agreement was given the name of Makkah. In its name, it assumed responsibility for security at a time of turmoil and amid an increasingly volatile global situation. No gesture or initiative was left untried in the effort to ease tensions with Iran. And Iran bombed every one of them.
The Asian triangle whose creation was announced in Makkah is a natural and direct response to this rampant belligerence. Three established powers have finally recognized that, in times of upheaval, deterrence is indispensable.
Since World War II, Türkiye has remained one of NATO's strongest members. Pakistan, meanwhile, played a pivotal role in establishing the relationship between the United States and China. Both countries have maintained close and longstanding ties with the Kingdom since the days of King Abdulaziz.
These relationships have always been distinctive in character, as evidenced across numerous fields, including the military and economic spheres. But the hostile climate Iran has created across the region has compelled the three countries to move from historic ties to a fully fledged alliance.
The so-called resistance states have long favored grandiloquent political language, with "strategic patience" among the most familiar expressions. Judging from Iran's reaction to the Makkah Agreement, Tehran appears to have exhausted every measure of strategic patience.
One Iranian lawmaker said that a "piece of paper" could not guarantee the security of the parties concerned.
Perhaps not. But what can guarantee anything in a world that does not know what each new day will bring? A world instinctively divided against itself: one part governed by norms, laws, and the principles of statehood, and another by contempt for the law and for the basic principles of normal international relations.
Three Muslim states, each an established pillar of the international community, have signed their pledge under the auspices of Makkah: a commitment to protect this ummah from a civilization of tentacles.
