Defensive weaknesses remain a huge issue

The reasons for Arsenal’s improvement lie in greater organisation, harder running and midfielders who actually bother to put a tackle in. Complaints aimed at Arsène Wenger during the latter years of his tenure have been addressed; in Unai Emery, Arsenal appointed the technocrat that Wenger had long ceased to be. The Basque has created a foundation for Mesut Özil to weave his magic, and Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score goals. When fans sing of having their Arsenal “back” it is the beautiful football of Wenger’s peak era they are harking back to, and not yet the strident winning machine the team was at the start of this century. Arsenal’s weaknesses still lie in a defence that was sorely tested by Leicester in Monday’s first half. Emery lacks the quality of defenders that Liverpool and Manchester City boast. Champions League qualification would seem the limit of ambition for now. John Brewin

Much improved but still too flawed to go all the way

The football is thrilling, the spirit is invigorated, the crowd is united, but it still feels unlikely that, come the end of the season, any of Arsenal’s five captains will be lifting the Premier League trophy. These are heady days in the Unai Emery-era, with the second-half display against Leicester as good as it’s got so far under the 46-year-old, but there is a distinctly Liverpool 2013-14 feel about this Arsenal side in that it can score for fun, contains an enigmatic, attacking genius but remains notably flawed. Arsenal’s defence is not only paper-thin in terms of resources but also incredibly fragile, as seen during the first half against Leicester. Also, Emery’s men continue to start games poorly and against better teams that will surely cost them. All of which should not dampen the upbeat mood surrounding Arsenal – they appear reborn and, in Lucas Torreira, may have found the gnarly, canny midfielder lacking for so long under Wenger. A top-four finish looks increasingly possible. But the title? Not yet. Sachin Nakrani

Momentum could take on a life of its own

Let’s ignore the caveats for a moment (the defence, Manchester City) and accentuate the positives. When Arsenal attack, as they did in the second-half against Leicester, they reveal themselves to have the firepower of champions. In Lacazette and Aubameyang, they have two expert finishers (and to be cheeky for a moment, with Gabriel Jesus stalling in his development, do City?). In Henrikh Mikhitaryan, Aaron Ramsey and Özil they have creativity to match their rivals, too. Of course there’s a difference between having the talent and making best use of it, as Arsenal know all too well from recent years. But that’s the most striking aspect of the improvement so far under Emery – individual performance levels are rising. Keep it going and momentum might take on a life of its own. Arsenal’s next five fixtures are Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Wolves, Bournemouth and Tottenham. Paul MacInnes

Liverpool visit will provide a litmus test

Arsenal are certainly on an impressive run of form: 10 wins on the bounce, with 18 scored and three conceded in the last seven. There might be green shoots under Emery but this has been a relatively easy run of fixtures – just two of those wins came against teams in the top half of the Premier League. Against Watford and Leicester in particular Arsenal were defensively frail – they have conceded more shots on their goal this season (125) than Manchester City (55), Liverpool (78) or Chelsea (82). A sense of perspective remains key: Arsenal’s record against the so-called Big Six remains dreadful, with just one win in the past 12 matches. If Arsenal are to make the leap from last season’s sixth place to genuine title contenders, they must beat (or at least avoid defeat to) their title rivals. Liverpool’s visit on 3 November should be a good litmus test of how far this team has come under Emery, and how far they still have to go. Michael Butler

Chelsea forward ‌Joao Pedro is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks after suffering a thigh injury in training, manager Xabi Alonso said on Tuesday ahead of his side's League Cup clash with Liverpool.

The 25-year-old Brazilian missed Saturday's ‌defeat by ‌Tottenham Hotspur after ‌picking up the injury during a training session on Friday.

"He has an injury on his thigh and he is going to be out for a few weeks," Alonso told reporters. "Let's see ‌how many; ‌we don't want to predict on ‌that, but he's not ready ‌for the next games."

Pedro has made a bright start to the season, scoring five goals ‌and providing three assists in seven appearances across all competitions.

Alonso acknowledged the loss of the Brazil international but said Chelsea had the depth to cope with his absence.

Chelsea will face Liverpool on Wednesday in the League Cup last 16 and host Manchester United in the league on Saturday.

The Swiss Football Association (SFV) ‌said on Tuesday that Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo will be available for selection again next month, after completing an investigation into forged COVID-19 vaccination certificates acquired by the pair.

The SFV and Xhaka agreed that he would miss Switzerland's October Nations League fixtures with Scotland, Slovenia and North Macedonia, after the midfielder admitted to acquiring a fake certificate ‌in order to ‌be able to travel and ‌compete in 2022.

Forward Embolo was also dropped from the Switzerland squad later in September for the same reason.

"The SFV has examined the two cases comprehensively and has come to the conclusion that the return of the players after the conclusion of the legal proceedings and taking ‌into account the ‌sporting consequences (four missed international matches in September and October) ‌is justifiable," the SFV said in a ‌statement.

"We are convinced that a return to the national team in November is responsible and right," added national team director Pierluigi Tami.

Both Xhaka and ‌Embolo were given a suspended fine of 150,000 Swiss francs ($181,225), which will be in place for a probationary period of two years.

Xhaka apologized and took responsibility for his actions, calling it "a mistake".

The statement went on to confirm that Xhaka would not have the captaincy removed, highlighting that the decision remains with the team and the coach, Murat Yakin.

Switzerland face Slovenia and Scotland in their final two Nations League group games in November, and sit top of Group E with 12 points.

Bayern Munich coach ‌Vincent Kompany is improving following a collapse in training last week and there is no date for his return yet, assistant coach Aaron Danks said on Tuesday.

The Belgian was rushed to hospital on Friday after collapsing during a reserve-team training session and is expected to be sidelined for weeks. The 40-year-old had been battling a virus in recent days and had missed some training sessions before his collapse.

"I paid him a short ‌visit yesterday," ‌Danks told a press conference ahead of ‌Wednesday's German Cup second round against visitors Magdeburg.

"He is in good spirits. It looks like every day he is getting better. There are no major updates in terms of diagnosis or return to work. Let him rest, let him take his time."

The German champions have a busy match schedule with Magdeburg on Wednesday, followed by ‌the Klassiker against title rivals ‌Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday. They then travel ‌to Madrid in the Champions League next week to ‌face Atletico.

"We had some good conversations (with Kompany) but kept it away from football and specific tactics," Danks said. "It was just a friendly chat and nice to see him and ‌catch up."

The assistant coach said Kompany's health scare coupled with Monday's Ballon d'Or win for Bayern striker Harry Kane reflected a rollercoaster of emotions for a squad that has shown the necessary team spirit to stay on course.

Kane is the first Englishman to win the prestigious award in 25 years, after Michael Owen won it in 2001.

"For us, we are super professional," Danks said. "Full extremes of life in the last week. Joys and highs for Harry and the lows of the last days."

"To get through these moments we had to rely on our chemistry, our team spirit and that definitely helped us," he added.
