The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed “deep alarm” over reports that eight children – all under the age of five – have died in Syria’s Al Hol camp, last week.
The children died due to malnutrition-related complications, dehydration from diarrhea, heart failure, internal bleeding, and hypoglycemia, according to UNICEF.
The deaths occurred between 6 and 10 August.
United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria Imran Riza saidL: “I am deeply saddened by the news of these children’s deaths. It underscores the basic fact that no child should be forced to live under the challenging and potentially dangerous humanitarian conditions at Al Hol camp.”
Save the Children International noted that there are around 46,000 children among the 65,000 individuals in the camp.
Notably, health services have deteriorated in the camp due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
