The Yemeni government on Monday condemned “the Iranian regime smuggling one of its Revolutionary Guard members into Yemen by appointing him as ambassador to the Houthi coup militia.”
It said that the move is “a clear violation of international law and Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2216.”
In a letter written to the UN Security Council, the Yemeni government indicated that the new ambassador appointed to Sanaa is a leader of the Revolutionary Guards’ notorious Quds Force and was closely involved with its late commander Qasem Soleimani.
Hassan Eyrlou, Iran’s ambassador to Yemen, had arrived in Houthi-held Sanaa, according to a statement given out by Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Said Khatibzadeh and reported by Fars news agency.
The Yemeni government confirmed that practices staged by the Iranian regime are considered blatant challenge to the international community and international accords.
They are also a breach to international commitments made by Iran regarding diplomatic relations.
Saying that actions by the Iranian regime represent a dangerous precedent, the Yemeni government warned that Tehran’s behavior threatens to violate the rights of member states at the United Nations.
Iran has been focused on backing anti-state militants in Yemen, enabling them to attack national sovereignty and seize state assets.
According to the Yemeni government, Iran, by appointing an ambassador to Sanaa, had breached its international obligations and the 2015 UN Security Council resolution 2216.
More so, the government called on the international community and the UN Security Council to condemn “the illegal Iranian practices and violations” and Tehran’s “blatant and continuous interference in Yemen’s internal affairs.”
The government touched upon Iran receiving credentials for a representative to Houthis as an ambassador on November 19, 2019 and enabling a coupist militia to work under the name of member state in the UN.
The government noted that defending the international law is collective task that must be shouldered by all member states in the UN, calling upon the Security Council to denounce these reckless acts.
