Iran would look at the actions of any future US administration, rather than the name of the winner of the presidential race, according to the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry.
Iran’s position is clear, said Saeed Khatibzadeh, adding: “We do not look at tomorrow [US elections' day], we will be watching the approach of the new US administration, whichever party it's from.”
"More than the result of the election, we will pay attention to the actions" of whoever is president, he added.
On Tuesday, Republican President Donald Trump and Democratic Joe Biden will compete in the presidential race.
Trump adopted a policy of “maximum pressure” towards Iran and re-imposed harsh economic sanctions after his unilateral withdrawal from the agreement on its nuclear program in 2018, and Biden was Barack Obama’s VP at the conclusion of the agreement in 2015.
Biden said he intends to offer Tehran a credible path back to diplomacy if he wins the elections.
“If Iran returns to strict compliance with the nuclear deal, the United States would rejoin the agreement as a starting point for follow-on negotiations.”
Khatibzadeh indicated that both the democratic and republican parties have realized the extent of the failure of their policies regarding Iran, adding that the “framework for talks” is the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Iran previously showed its willingness to welcome the US return to the agreement, provided that it is coupled with compensation for losses and guarantees not to withdraw again.
Iran denies US accusations of interfering in the elections or trying to influence it by sending emails to voters.
Khatibzadeh strongly denied the “baseless and unfounded” accusations made by Washington, stressing that Tehran has no interest in interfering in the US elections.
Tehran “has repeatedly stated that it neither has any interest in interfering in the US election nor does it think interference would be to anyone's benefit.”
"The US election has turned into a show, and as in a show, they try to create more attractions," he added.
