A US official has met with high-ranking Mauritanian officials to discuss the security situation in the Sahel region.
“In my meeting with the President, we discussed how best to strengthen the US-Mauritania partnership given our shared security, economic, and political goals,” US Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer said in remarks following talks with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani in Nouakchott.
“The security situation in the Sahel remains a shared priority for the United States and Mauritania,” he said.
“Mauritania’s whole-of-government approach to combating terrorism is praiseworthy because it addresses not only the security threat, but the underlying political, economic, and development needs that – if ignored – threaten the stability and security of a country,” he added.
Finer also met with Mauritanian Prime Minister Mohamed Ould Bilal and Foreign Minister Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed.
