OIC Urges Greater Cooperation from Iran over 2016 Attack against Saudi Embassy

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called on Iran to be more “clear” in its investigation into the attacks against the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad in early 2016.

The OIC General Secretariat urged Iranian authorities for more cooperation in the probes as it had vowed to do so.

The authorities should, based on OIC principles, work seriously to deter any escalation in stances in order to eliminate any vagueness that can only complicate the case, it added.

The remarks were made in wake of a Saudi Foreign Ministry statement last week that accused Iranian authorities of “persistently and consistently stalling” in the investigation into the embassy and consulate attacks.

The Islamic organization stressed the importance of “transparency and integrity” that would benefit Iran and Saudi Arabia and respect Riyadh’s legitimate demands.

Iran, despite an initial approval, has denied a Saudi team entry into Iran as part of the Iranian team investigating the attacks on the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad, said a Foreign Ministry source last week according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Lebanese Army Says Soldier Killed in Israeli Attack in Southern Lebanon

The Lebanese army said on Sunday that a soldier had been killed in an Israeli strike on southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, an Israeli strike hit south Beirut on Sunday, Lebanese state media reported, with a medical source telling AFP it made impact about 100 metres away from a public hospital.

The strike hit Beirut's Jnah neighborhood near Rafik Hariri University Hospital, the largest public medical facility in the country.

Israel's military earlier warned it was carrying out strikes on Beirut.

Saudi Arabia condemned on Sunday the riots, assaults, and attempted vandalism that targeted the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates and the residence of its head of mission in Damascus.

A Foreign Ministry statement said the Kingdom also slammed the “unacceptable offenses directed at the national symbols of the brotherly UAE.”

The ministry stressed the Kingdom’s “rejection of these attacks and all forms of violence against diplomats, stressing the need to ensure the protection of diplomats and diplomatic missions in line with relevant international laws and conventions.”

Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Albudaiwi also slammed the attack against the UAE embassy in Damascus, urging Syrian authorities to hold those responsible to account.

Oman and Iran held talks on easing passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the Omani state news agency reported Sunday, with the key shipping chokepoint effectively closed due to war in the Middle East.

"Oman and Iran held a meeting at the deputy ministers level in the foreign ministries of the two countries, with the attendance of specialists from both sides, during which the possible options were discussed regarding ensuring the smooth passage through the Strait of Hormuz," the news agency posted on X.

"The experts from both sides put forward a number of visions and proposals regarding it," it added.
