The Jordanian cabinet resigned on Wednesday to prepare for a major reshuffle, the third since Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz was appointed by King Abdullah II last June to address the country’s economic woes.
Petra news agency said the PM asked cabinet members to submit their resignations in preparation for a reshuffle in the coming days.
“The PM stressed the move comes in line with the requirements of the next phase,” the news agency said.
Sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that the new ministers would be sworn into office by the Jordanian King on Thursday.
The sources said the reshuffle would involve eight portfolios, including Interior Minister Samir Mubaidin, who will be succeeded by General Directorate of the Gendarmerie Director Maj. Gen. Hussein Hawatmeh.
Amid fierce parliamentary criticism against the performances of Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Hala Zawati, Minister of Information and Communications Technology Mothanna Gharaibeh and Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Mary Kawar, sources close to the PM said Razzaz has not yet decided to introduce changes to the three portfolios, better known as the ministries of “crises.”
But parliamentary sources predicted that Zawati would move to the Ministry of Planning.
“Muhannad Shehadeh, Minister of State for Investment Affairs, is expected to move out following the cabinet reshuffle,” the sources said.
They ruled out recent reports about the possible appointment of deputies in the cabinet.
Last May, thousands of Jordanians demonstrated in Amman calling for the withdrawal of a new income tax bill.
