For the first time since Houthis waged a military escalation targeting civilians and uprooting hundreds of families, the UN’s Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator, Diego Zorilla, visited al-Juba district south of the Yemeni governorate of Marib.

Zorilla listened to escapees who described the horrors committed by militias against al-Juba residents and complained about the inaction of international organizations.

During Zorilla’s visit, the UN official and his accompanying delegation reviewed humanitarian conditions in al-Juba, Yemeni government sources revealed.

Iran-backed Houthi militias have been waging an expansive war against al-Juba’s southern outskirts. This campaign has seen horrendous human rights violations against civilians, the targeting of refugee camps, and the looting of humanitarian relief.

Zorilla also met with the head of al-Juba’s local council, Mohammed Nimran.

Nimran explained the overall catastrophic humanitarian situation facing the population and displaced refugees in al-Juba amid “an absence of a real and effective role for the UN and its organizations.”

“Houthi militias’ systematic targeting of homes and civilians in villages, remote and safe camps, and public service facilities with ballistic missiles, drones, and long-range heavy weapons, aims to turn the district into an arena for conflict and worsen the humanitarian situation,” Nimran told Zorilla.

He added that the Houthi escalation either forces civilians to flee from their homes or die by continuous militia bombardment.

The Yemeni official moved on to urge the UN to “play its humanitarian, legal and moral role, and not show double standards when dealing with the violations and crimes committed by the Houthi militia.”

Local authorities in al-Juba organized a field tour for Zorilla that saw the UN official visit several villages and civilian areas in the district.

During the tour, Zorilla was briefed on the damages caused by direct targeting of villages, housing, and public service facilities with ballistic missiles, explosive drones, and heavy weapons fire.

The European Union on Monday condemned new Israeli measures to tighten control of the West Bank and pave the way for more settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, AFP reported.

"The European Union condemns recent decisions by Israel's security cabinet to expand Israeli control in the West Bank. This move is another step in the wrong direction," EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni told journalists.

The atrocities unleashed on El-Fasher in Sudan's Darfur region last October were a "preventable human rights catastrophe", the United Nations said Monday, warning they now risked being repeated in the neighbouring Kordofan region.

"My office sounded the alarm about the risk of mass atrocities in the besieged city of El-Fasher for more than a year ... but our warnings were ignored," UN rights chief Volker Turk told the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

He added that he was now "extremely concerned that these violations and abuses may be repeated in the Kordofan region".

The General Secretariat of the Arab League strongly condemned decisions by Israeli occupation authorities to impose fundamental changes on the legal and administrative status of the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the West Bank, describing them as a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of international law, international legitimacy resolutions, and signed agreements, SPA reported.

In a statement, the Arab League said the measures include facilitating the confiscation of private Palestinian property and transferring planning and licensing authorities in the city of Hebron and the area surrounding the Ibrahimi Mosque to occupation authorities.

It warned of the serious repercussions of these actions on the rights of the Palestinian people and on Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The statement reaffirmed the Arab League’s firm support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the establishment of their independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
