Six months since the start of military confrontations between Hezbollah and Israel in southern Lebanon, the front remains open to all possibilities with escalating military operations and threats on both sides.
Meanwhile, the attention is turning to the outcome of the ongoing negotiations regarding a ceasefire in Gaza, although it carries no guarantees that it could be extended to South of Lebanon.
On October 8, under the slogan of “supporting Gaza”, Hezbollah launched fire from South Lebanon towards Israel following Hamas’ initiation of “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation.
However, this “backing” turned into open confrontations between Hezbollah and Israel, which did not suffice with bombing military posts of the party, but also adopted an assassination policy targeting senior figures and widening the geographical scope of its bombardment and breaching the rules of engagement.
The Israeli war machine resumed assassinating several Hezbollah and Hamas leaders by targeting them in their cars or homes inside the Lebanese territory .
It also focused on bombing Hezbollah's infrastructure in attempts that seem to aim at cutting supply lines, including weapon depots and military centers, as repeatedly announced by Israel.
This ongoing escalation between Hezbollah and Israel leaves confrontations open to all possibilities in light of Israel’s continuous threats.
Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Galant, said after his meeting with the US envoy, Amos Hochstein, a few days ago, that the “ongoing tension with Hezbollah on the Lebanese border brings the situation closer to military escalation”.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah deputy secretary-general, Naim Qassem, believes there is a “90 percent chance that there will be no widespread war in Lebanon...we make sacrifices to prevent Lebanon from being dragged into war”, he said.
The Israeli side rejects linking any prospects for a ceasefire in Gaza to the situation in South Lebanon. But American officials have expressed their concern about Israel carrying out a ground incursion into Lebanon in the coming months."
Last week, CNN said that senior US officials expressed concern that Israel may be planning a ground incursion into Lebanon within months if diplomatic efforts fail to push the Lebanese group away from the borders with Israel.
Retired Lebanese Brigadier General Abdul Rahman Shehaitli, told Asharq Al-Awsat that an Israeli ground incursion into southern Lebanon was unlikely, noting that if it were to happen, it would be limited to villages near the border.
Sami Nader, director of the Middle East Institute for Strategic Affairs, told Asharq Al-Awsat that “Israel would focus more on the northern front if a ceasefire was reached in Gaza.'"
Lebanese officials emphasize the necessity of implementing UN Resolution 1701, and halting Israeli violations and hostilities. Israel on the other side, demands the evacuation of Hezbollah fighters from the border area and their retreat to a distance not less than 7 km away from its northern border, a demand rejected by Hezbollah.

A co-founder of Palestine Action challenged Britain's decision to ban the campaign group as a terrorist organization at the UK Supreme Court on Wednesday, arguing that the move was disproportionate and undermined counter-terrorism laws.

The British government proscribed Palestine Action last year after a series of high-profile incidents mostly targeting defense firms, culminating in a break-in at the Royal Air Force's Brize Norton air base in which two planes were damaged.

Britain's Home Office (interior ministry) argues that the group's escalating actions, causing serious property damage, particularly a 2024 raid targeting Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems, amounted to terrorism and justified the ban.

But the move has drawn criticism from civil liberties groups and prominent supporters including Irish novelist Sally Rooney, whose books can no longer be sold in Britain over her plans to provide royalties to the group.

There have been more than 3,600 arrests linked to support for Palestine Action between proscription in July 2025 and this June, representing more than one-third of all terrorism arrests in Britain since 9/11, according to Home Office statistics.

With the arrest of over 300 people last weekend outside the US embassy in London, plus two dozen or so outside the Supreme Court on Wednesday, the figure is now more than 4,000 – though any resulting charges could be dropped if the ban is overturned.

LAWYER COMPARES GROUP TO SUFFRAGETTES

Founded in 2020, Palestine Action carried out hundreds of "actions", many involving obstructing or occupying premises, or spraying graffiti and breaking windows of businesses they said were linked to providing arms to Israel.

After Israel began bombarding Gaza in response to a deadly attack by Hamas-led fighters in October 2023, Palestine Action's campaign escalated, the Home Office says, with the Elbit raid causing an estimated £1 million ($1.35 million) of damage.

Lawyers representing Huda Ammori, who co-founded Palestine Action, said that, at the time the group was proscribed, government officials had assessed that just three of 385 actions carried out over five years had met the definition of terrorism.

London's High Court initially ruled that the ban was unlawful, but the Court of Appeal overturned that decision in June, rejecting comparisons with historical groups such as the suffragettes who campaigned for women's right to vote.

Ammori's lawyer Raza Husain, however, said on Wednesday that the suffragettes and other groups "used tactics similar or more extreme than Palestine Action", citing the suffragettes' early 20th-century bombing campaign.

The Home Office, though, says the 2024 Elbit attack did involve the use of violence and weapons against security staff and police officers, one of whom suffered a spinal injury when she was hit with a sledgehammer.

The United States in August also designated Palestine Action as a terrorist group. President Donald Trump has described activists who targeted his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland last year as "terrorists".

An Israeli strike killed a motorcyclist in Lebanon's south on Wednesday, the Lebanese health ministry said, the first such death since September.

A drone carried out the strike in the Qabrikha area, killing one man and wounding another, the official National News Agency also said.

Hodeidah Governor to Asharq Al-Awsat: Fierce Fighting on Western Coast as Forces Press Ahead to Restore State Control

Hodeidah Governor Dr. Al-Hassan Taher said fighting on Yemen's western coast was at its fiercest, expressing optimism that the coming days would bring positive developments on the battlefield. He also revealed that 7,435 displaced people had been registered in Aden, Lahj and Abyan governorates, with efforts continuing to document families whose registration remains incomplete.

In exclusive remarks to Asharq Al-Awsat, Taher said Yemeni forces were determined to recapture areas seized by the Houthis, stressing that their objective extended beyond the districts of the western coast to restoring state institutions and reestablishing government authority throughout Yemen, with Saudi support.

On September 10, the Houthi terrorist group, backed by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), seized several areas along the western coast, most notably the strategically important port of Mocha, before advancing toward Dhubab and Bab Al-Mandab.

Yemeni government forces subsequently regained the initiative and recaptured large parts of those areas. Fierce battles are now underway to reclaim the remaining districts of Hodeidah Governorate as part of Operation Fajr Yemen, launched by the Yemeni government in early October.

Fierce Fighting on the Coast

The governor described the ongoing battles as intense, with both sides advancing and retreating.

"God willing, within the next two days, you will hear good news about the defeat of this rebellious group," he said.

Taher praised Saudi Arabia's support, describing the Kingdom as a steadfast brother and source of support for the Yemeni people that had stood by them through difficult circumstances.

"We will not merely return to the areas we were forced to leave. We will continue until all Yemeni territory is liberated, with the support of our brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," he added.

7,435 Displaced People in Three Governorates

Taher said authorities had registered 7,435 displaced people in Aden, Lahj and Abyan, representing approximately 70% of the total displaced population. Relevant agencies are continuing to collect information to complete the registration of the remaining families.

He explained that most of those displaced had fled Al-Khokha district, which had served as the governorate's temporary capital, as well as Hays and Mocha. Around 4,000 have settled in Aden.

The governor said local authorities were coordinating with their counterparts in Aden, Lahj and Abyan to facilitate registration and aid distribution, with the participation of emergency response units and community committees.

He expressed appreciation to the local authorities in the three governorates for providing displaced families with the necessary assistance and facilities.

Cash Assistance and Relief Supplies

Taher expects cash assistance to be distributed to eligible beneficiaries within the next two days, once names have been verified and registration details corrected.

The beneficiary lists will be forwarded to money exchange companies, and recipients will receive text messages enabling them to collect their payments.

He explained that the assistance would be distributed through this mechanism without direct cash handovers or intervention by local authorities.

The governor said beneficiary lists covering five districts in Aden, namely Al-Tawahi, Seera, Al-Mansoura, Al-Mualla and Khormaksar, included approximately 1,070 recipients.

He noted that the start of payments had been delayed to allow for the completion of the verification process.

Taher identified shelter, food and cash assistance as the most pressing humanitarian needs of displaced families.

He said the government had already disbursed part of the allocated assistance, while local organizations were preparing to reach displacement camps and gathering sites in coordination with the relevant authorities in host governorates.

Role of KSrelief

Taher praised the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) for supporting the people of Hodeidah during both crises and more stable periods.

He said the center had provided approximately 5,000 food baskets, of which 2,450 had arrived through its local partner, the Yamani Foundation, and had been distributed to camps hosting displaced people from several governorates.

Displaced Families Expected to Return Soon

Addressing the Houthis, Taher said the forced displacement of residents demonstrated what he described as the intimidation and abuses they faced.

He added that many people had fled their homes out of fear of such treatment or concerns that their children would be forced to fight.

In a message to residents who had been displaced, the governor said: "God willing, you will return soon, and this rebellious group will be defeated."

He reiterated that Yemeni forces would continue their military campaign until the entire territory of the republic had been restored to government control.
