Turkish police detained five suspects Friday on charges of espionage for the Iranian intelligence service, local media reported.
Officers carried out operations in Türkiye’s largest city Istanbul as well as in Antalya and Mersin in the south, and detained five people, the DHA news agency reported.
The suspects allegedly collected information about military bases and key regions in Türkiye and abroad, before passing it on to the Iranian intelligence service, the report said.
There was no immediate information about the nationality of the suspects.
Relations have been strained between Türkiye and Iran since the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December. Ankara has criticized Tehran over its regional meddling, while the latter has accused the former of playing a role in the change in Syria.
