United Nations chief Antonio Guterres called Saturday for a permanent and immediate ceasefire in Gaza after Israel announced early stages of an intensified operation on the besieged Palestinian territory.
"We need a permanent ceasefire, now," Guterres told leaders gathered in Baghdad for an Arab League summit. "I am alarmed by reported plans by Israel to expand ground operations and more."
The Israeli army said on Saturday it had begun the "initial stages" of the offensive, known as Operation Gideon's Chariots.
The operation was part of "the expansion of the battle in the Gaza Strip, with the goal of achieving all the war's objectives, including the release of the abducted and the defeat of Hamas," it said in a post in Arabic.
United Nations experts warn that famine looms in Gaza after Israel blocked aid deliveries to the strip 76 days ago, with UN aid chief Tom Fletcher asking the Security Council this week if it would act to "prevent genocide."
