In an extraordinary virtual session held Sunday, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) strongly condemned Israel’s recent airstrikes on Iran, denouncing them as a violation of Iranian sovereignty and a blatant breach of international law and the UN Charter. The council urged an immediate return to diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the growing regional tensions.

GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi described the current escalation as “unprecedented,” pointing to the Israeli military strikes on Iranian territory and Tehran’s subsequent retaliatory actions.

“These developments have sharply heightened tensions in the region,” he said, warning that they “open the door to uncertain and troubling scenarios.”

Albudaiwi revealed that in light of the unfolding crisis, the GCC Emergency Management Center had been activated to monitor and respond to potential consequences, particularly those involving Iran’s nuclear facilities.

“We acted swiftly and responsibly in recognition of the gravity of the situation,” he said, citing the danger of strikes on nuclear infrastructure and the potential for serious environmental and technical fallout.

Among the chief concerns raised during the meeting were the regional consequences of a broader escalation - especially any damage to nuclear sites - and the far-reaching impacts this could have on the environment, regional infrastructure, and the economic stability of Gulf states. The GCC also highlighted the risks to global supply chains, energy markets, and the security of key maritime corridors.

In a statement, the council emphasized that “until now, all technical indicators remain within safe limits,” adding that there is no immediate cause for alarm. Nonetheless, member states remain on high alert. “Full readiness and constant vigilance are essential in facing this volatile situation,” said Albudaiwi.

He also reaffirmed the council’s foundational values of unity, collective security, and regional stability. “The GCC was established on the principles of solidarity and joint action,” he said. “We continue to believe that stability is essential for the prosperity and well-being of our peoples.”

Albudaiwi reiterated the GCC’s longstanding commitment to conflict prevention, dialogue facilitation, and the avoidance of military escalation.

“We renew our call to all nations and actors to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from further military action,” he said. “The region stands at the edge of a wider conflict that could spiral out of control, with consequences no one can predict or manage.”

Egypt's National Defense Council decided on Sunday to provide all necessary and possible forms of support to Saudi Arabia to defend its security and stability, and to safeguard its capabilities, territorial integrity, and Islamic holy sites.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi chaired a meeting of the National Defense Council at the Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo, said a statement the spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency on Facebook.

The Council reviewed the overall current regional developments and the dangerous escalations unfolding in the region, particularly in light of the intensifying and unacceptable attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, he added.

Consequently, the Council decided on "complete alignment and full solidarity with the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, stemming from the historical relations and solid bonds connecting the peoples of the two brotherly nations as the heart of the Arab nation, and out of the firm belief that Saudi national security is inextricably linked to Egyptian and Arab national security."

The Council also decided to "provide all necessary and possible forms of support to Saudi Arabia to defend its security and stability, and to safeguard its capabilities, territorial integrity, and Islamic holy sites," as well as to continue and intensify political and diplomatic efforts, in coordination with relevant regional and international parties, to contribute to de-escalation across the entire region and to peacefully resolve the crises unfolding within it.

The meeting was attended by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, and the ministers of Interior, Finance, Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates' Affairs.

It was also attended by the head of the General Intelligence Service, commanders of the main branches of the Armed Forces, Chief of the Armed Forces Operations Authority, chief of Military Intelligence, and Secretary-General of the National Defense Council.

Gulf Foreign Ministers will meet in Manama on Sunday to discuss regional and international developments, and ways to strengthen political coordination and joint action, as a new round of the Gulf-Russian Strategic Dialogue takes place as part of efforts by both sides to expand cooperation and exchange views on issues of common interest.

Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Albudaiwi said in a statement that the meeting, chaired by Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al-Zayani, will discuss a number of issues related to advancing joint Gulf action and review the latest developments in the region and the world.

The Manama meetings take on added significance with the convening of the ninth Joint Ministerial Meeting of the Gulf-Russian Strategic Dialogue on the sidelines of the GCC’s 168th ministerial session. The meeting aims to strengthen relations between the two sides and broaden the scope of their partnership across various fields.

Albudaiwi said the Gulf-Russian meeting reflects the GCC states’ efforts to deepen their relations with countries and regional and international blocs and to build strategic partnerships that strengthen their presence and role on the international stage.

The Secretary-General said the talks will address ways to further develop Gulf-Russian cooperation and exchange views on issues of mutual concern in a manner that serves the interests of both sides.

The strategic dialogue between the GCC and Russia is based on a memorandum of understanding signed by the two sides in November 2011, which established an institutional framework for developing relations, conducting political consultations, and strengthening cooperation in areas of shared interest.

Albudaiwi reaffirmed ongoing efforts to further advance Gulf-Russian relations in ways that serve mutual interests and strengthen the partnership between the two sides.
