Arab Parliament Speaker Mohamed Al-Yammahi welcomed the announcement made by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of his country’s intention to recognize the State of Palestine.
Al-Yammahi stressed that this step represents positive progress toward international recognition of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost of which is the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, the Saudi Press Agency said.
Al-Yammahi also commended New Zealand’s announcement that its cabinet will make a formal decision on Palestinian statehood in September. He praised the growing international positions in support of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
He urged other countries of the world to take similar steps, considering such action a legal and moral duty and a genuine contribution to ending the occupation, alleviating the decades-long suffering of the Palestinian people, and enhancing the chances of achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
He affirmed that recognizing the State of Palestine is the cornerstone of any just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian cause, reiterating the Arab Parliament’s continued parliamentary and diplomatic efforts to support the Palestinian cause and uphold the rights of the Palestinian people at all levels.
