Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa is set to take part in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September in New York, an official from the Foreign Ministry told AFP on Monday.
al-Sharaa took power in December after his group led a coalition of opposition forces that toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad after nearly 14 years of grueling civil war.
“Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa will participate in the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he will deliver a speech,” the official said on condition of anonymity.
“He will be the first Syrian president to speak at the United Nations since former President Noureddine al-Atassi in 1967, and the first Syrian president to take part in the Assembly’s high-level week, scheduled for Sept. 22-30.”
Since taking power, Syria’s new authorities have gained regional and international support.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani addressed the United Nations for the first time on April 25 and raised his country’s new flag at the body’s New York headquarters, alongside the flags of 192 member states.
Earlier, a high-ranking diplomatic source at the UN told Asharq Al-Awsat that preparations were underway for a possible visit by a al-Sharaa to New York in September.
Syria was among the original 51 member states that established the UN and was represented at the San Francisco Conference in 1945 by a delegation, alongside other Arab nations like Egypt and Lebanon.
However, none of its former presidents have attended the UN yearly sessions.
But President Noureddine al-Atassi visited New York in 1967 and addressed the UN General Assembly following the Arab ‘Naksa’ in the Six-Day War which occurred in June 1967.
