The Saudi Fashion Commission has announced the launch of the white paper “Craftonomics in Fashion: How Handicrafts Are Reshaping the Global Fashion Economy,” marking a pivotal step to enhance the global dialogue on cultural heritage and fashion innovation.
The launch comes in line with the Ministry of Culture's designation of 2025 as the Year of Handicrafts, reflecting the Kingdom's commitment to preserving tradition while creating economic opportunities.
The white paper reviews the interaction between crafts and fashion, presenting global insights supported by data-driven analysis. It highlights the growing role of handicrafts in driving growth in the global fashion industry, while showcasing the Kingdom’s heritage of artisanal practices.
By combining research, case studies, and market projections, the white paper presents handicrafts not only as cultural assets but also as drivers of economic diversification and creative expression.
Key statistics note that the Saudi handicrafts sector is valued at $405 million, with local crafts representing 20% of the market. Revival efforts are accelerating with the Year of Handicrafts 2025, combining cultural preservation with industry development.
More than 5,000 artisans are registered on the Heritage Commission’s Abde'a platform, with more than 4,400 products produced for hotels, airlines, and retail channels. Women artisans significantly outnumber men, reflecting the sector’s role in inclusive growth and community empowerment.
Through the white paper “Craftonomics in Fashion,” the commission affirms that handicrafts have become integral to sustainable fashion practices, localized production models, and consumer demand for authenticity. It shows how traditional skills - when supported by innovation and global partnerships - can serve as catalysts for cross-cultural collaboration and new economic opportunities.
The launch reflects the broader role of the Fashion Commission in enabling Saudi creativity, enhancing cultural exchange, supporting artisans, and contributing to the sustainable growth of the fashion industry.
