The US military's Middle East command on Wednesday called on Hamas to stop its violence against civilians in the Gaza Strip and to seize “an historic opportunity for peace.”
CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said in statement, “We strongly urge Hamas to immediately suspend violence and shooting at innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza – in both Hamas-held parts of Gaza and those secured by the Israeli army behind the Yellow Line.”
He added, “This is an historic opportunity for peace. Hamas should seize it by fully standing down, strictly adhering to President Trump’s 20-point peace plan, and disarming without delay.”
Cooper also said CENTCOM conveyed its concerns to the mediators who agreed to work with the US to enforce the peace and protect innocent Gaza civilians.
“We remain highly optimistic for the future of peace in the region,” he noted.
Led by CENTCOM, the US is expected to deploy up to 200 troops to Israel to help with stabilization efforts in Gaza. However, no Americans are expected to be deployed into the Palestinian enclave.
Hamas on Monday night published a video showing its armed personnel publicly executing eight blindfolded, bound and kneeling men in the street, with the group saying that its forces were “carrying out the death sentence against a number of collaborators and outlaws in Gaza City.”
The Palestinian Authority condemned the Hamas execution of Palestinians in Gaza as “heinous crimes” and urged a return of “legitimate” Palestinian leadership to stem the chaos roiling the Strip amid the ceasefire with Israel.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump said Hamas had killed “a number of gang members,” which he said did not bother him.
