US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo defended the policies of “Make America Great Again” as he spoke Tuesday by video-conference to the World Economic Forum in Davos.

He said the Trump administration would echo former President Ronald Reagan’s mantra of “peace through strength” in its dealings with other countries.

“America is committed to helping the Middle East be secure and stable... America will need coalitions built out to ensure that there is Middle East stability,” he said.

He added that Iran is “truly the malign actor” in Yemen, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon. He said that a coalition of US allies is “so central” to creating stability in the Middle East.

Commenting on the next round of US-China trade talks, Pompeo said he was optimistic that the Chinese delegation would be well received and both sides would "have a good outcome from those conversations."

"I don't want to get ahead of the conversations and negotiations that are taking place. There is lots of hard work to do. I am very confident that there will be a bright future for the United States and its people, but for the Chinese people as well," he added.

Pompeo called on Moscow to change its "outlook and behavior", and denied Washington had turned isolationist.

“It should not go unnoticed that we’ve also defeated the ISIS caliphate in Syria and Iraq... There’s a lot more work to do, and with your help, I know we’ll achieve it” he said.

Brazil’s rightwing president Jair Bolsonaro has prompted fresh alarm among environmentalists after stressing that protecting his country’s unique ecosystem has to be consistent with growing the economy.

Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum Klaus Schwab said: "We are at the crossroads of the history of humanity. We now have to shape the future.”

“We feel Globalization 4.0 has to be more human-centered… We are now in some ways in a battle between robots and humankind. We don’t want to become slaves of the new technology,” he continued.

Ukraine again has a "stable connection" to Starlink, the government said on Saturday, after days of tensions with Washington over the SpaceX-made network crucial to the Ukrainian army's operations.

Kyiv relies on the civilian Starlink satellite communications system and the military-grade Starshield version as it tries to defend itself from Russian missile and drone attacks.

"Monitoring systems are recording a recovery in the speed of Starlink/Starshield. We are registering a speed of more than 400 km/h, the connection is stable," Defence Minister Yevgeniy Khmara said in a statement.

"This result is above all important for our front, for our soldiers, for the operation of drones, for logistics and for communications," he added.

The satellite network has been at the centre of a row between Ukraine and the United States.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Washington of helping Russia by failing to warn Kyiv of incoming missile strikes and hobbling its military response by throttling Starlink's speed.

Khmara credited Zelensky's "firm stance" on the issue, judging that it was "bearing fruit".

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he would speak to tech tycoon Elon Musk, head of SpaceX, if Kyiv was having problems with the communications platform.

The US president had said Thursday that Musk had restored access.

While Musk has shifted stance on Ukraine many times since Russia's invasion in 2022, he has insisted that any disruption was the responsibility of the US government, not SpaceX.

Two military planes crashed mid-air during training at an air base in the Philippines, killing four pilots, the air force said Saturday.

The SF-260 single propeller planes crashed at Fernando Air Base, south of Manila, on Friday afternoon.

"Both aircraft went down within the base perimeter, with no other casualties reported," Philippine Air Force spokesman Colonel Alvin Capinguian said in a statement.

An investigation was opened to determine the cause of the mishap, and Capinguian said the air force's fleet of SF-260s has been temporarily grounded as a precaution.

There have been a number of deadly crashes involving Philippine military aircraft in recent years.

In May, two military pilots were killed when another SF-260 plane crashed during a training flight in Benguet province in the northern Philippines.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for the country's army companies to be turned into elite, self-sufficient combat units during a two-day meeting of company commanders in Pyongyang, state media KCNA said on Saturday.

The event underscored Kim's consistent policy priority of strengthening the military.

In a speech at a conference of company commanders for North Korea's Army on October 22-23, which KCNA said was the first military-wide gathering since the Ninth Congress of North Korea's ruling party in February, Kim called for every company to fully prepare so that "the goal of the new-era military build-up" can be achieved.

"Let us build the strongest army and speed up a military revolution in our style,” Reuters quoted Kim as saying.

During the Ninth Congress of North Korea's ruling party in February, which sets the country's direction for the next five years, Kim called for stronger conventional armed forces as well as reaffirming efforts to develop nuclear weapons and missiles.
