Algeria will hold a presidential election on December 12, interim President Abdelkader Bensalah announced in a televised speech on Sunday.

"I have decided... that the date of the presidential election will be Thursday, December 12," said Bensalah, after army chief of staff Lieutenant General Ahmed Gaid Salah announced earlier this month that it is best to summon an electoral college on September 15.

The Algerian constitution stipulates that presidential elections are held within ninety days from the date the president signed the decree calling for voters to vote.

In his speech, the interim president praised the army leadership and its great role in maintaining the country’s stability.

Bensalah called for a high turnout to choose a new president, pointing out that he signed the presidential decree summoning the electorate.

The Constitutional Council had canceled a presidential election scheduled for July 4 due to lack of candidates.

Former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika canceled the April 18 elections, after protesters marched against his candidacy for a fifth term, forcing him to resign.

President of the Independent National Authority for the Organization of Elections Mohammed Sharafi called on Algerians to participate in the elections, which are rejected by the protesters.

Sharafi, a former Minister of Justice, was announced Sunday as president of the Authority. Its 50 members were also named.

After his appointment, Sharafi said the Authority’s task is to receive candidate nominations, monitor the electoral process, and announce its results.

The Algerian authorities aim to show their true intentions to organize fair elections, according to an earlier statement by the interim president.

During a press conference after taking office, Sharafi defended himself after being described as “one of the remnants of Bouteflika's regime”. He served as the former president’s adviser in 2009, and was appointed in 2012 as Minister of Justice.

The European Union on Monday condemned new Israeli measures to tighten control of the West Bank and pave the way for more settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, AFP reported.

"The European Union condemns recent decisions by Israel's security cabinet to expand Israeli control in the West Bank. This move is another step in the wrong direction," EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni told journalists.

The atrocities unleashed on El-Fasher in Sudan's Darfur region last October were a "preventable human rights catastrophe", the United Nations said Monday, warning they now risked being repeated in the neighbouring Kordofan region.

"My office sounded the alarm about the risk of mass atrocities in the besieged city of El-Fasher for more than a year ... but our warnings were ignored," UN rights chief Volker Turk told the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

He added that he was now "extremely concerned that these violations and abuses may be repeated in the Kordofan region".

The General Secretariat of the Arab League strongly condemned decisions by Israeli occupation authorities to impose fundamental changes on the legal and administrative status of the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly in the West Bank, describing them as a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of international law, international legitimacy resolutions, and signed agreements, SPA reported.

In a statement, the Arab League said the measures include facilitating the confiscation of private Palestinian property and transferring planning and licensing authorities in the city of Hebron and the area surrounding the Ibrahimi Mosque to occupation authorities.

It warned of the serious repercussions of these actions on the rights of the Palestinian people and on Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The statement reaffirmed the Arab League’s firm support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the establishment of their independent state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
