The Saudi Health Ministry said Thursday that the Kingdom has a total of 33,731 cases of the coronavirus after 1,793 more people tested positive as the Interior Ministry announced that gatherings of more than five people are banned.

Health Ministry spokesman Dr. Mohammed Abdelali said five percent of the new cases are children, 93 percent are adults and the rest are aged above 65.

He said that of the new cases, 25 percent are Saudi citizens while the remaining 75 percent are foreigners from different nationalities.

So far, 7,798 patients have recovered after another 1,015 tested negative, he added.

Abdelali said in his weekly briefing on the pandemic that the death toll from the outbreak rose by ten in the Kingdom to reach 219.

The ministry spokesman stressed the importance of vaccinating children on time to avoid putting them at risk for developing other diseases.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Interior Ministry announced on Thursday forming a police unit to monitor violations of rules banning gatherings of more than five people imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Those breaching the rules would be punished by law, it said.

It also encouraged people to report in breach of the restrictions.

Kuwait's foreign ministry issued on Sunday a circular indicating that it had listed eight hospitals in Lebanon as part of regulations related to "combating terrorism.”

Lebanon's health ministry expressed surprise and said it would seek clarification.

It said it received the Kuwaiti statement "with great surprise", adding it had not been provided with "any information or notification from any Kuwaiti entity about this matter.”

"The hospitals mentioned in the statement are registered with the syndicate of private hospitals in Lebanon and carry out their role in providing treatment and health services to all Lebanese without exception," the ministry statement said.

It called the facilities "an essential part of the Lebanese health system,” and said it would contact the relevant authorities to request clarification and "protect Lebanon's health system.”

It noted that "Kuwait has numerous joint projects with the ministry... and has been among the most prominent countries that have stood by the health system during the successive crises that Lebanon has faced.”

The latest move was "unprecedented and inconsistent" with the Gulf country's usual approach, it added.
